Was told by a local smasher to put this on AIB since the discussion was reopened after APEX and I never published it on SWF or AIB. This is what I wrote word for word, there are probably things I dont agree with in there anymore. But im just curious what kind of reception it will get considering where the community was at in Sept'11 and now in 2012.
Banning Metaknight (MK) has easily been the most debated subject in smash since the first Smash Back Room
vote on the matter. Throughout the course of Brawls meta-game we have seen results that reveal that Metaknight has been dominating tournaments. As a former Fox player to now a pure MK main I find it interesting looking at my old and new mentalities.
The reason I dropped Fox for Metaknight was the same reasons many of you are pro-ban, I simply couldnt get passed MK in tournaments. What I didnt realize back then was that it wasnt that Fox couldnt do it, it was actually a matter of me not being good enough and having the smarts needed as a player. I admittedly tried to compensate for my lack of skill by blaming the character instead of seeing Fox's true potential and working on myself as a player. As I developed as an MK main I took my level of dedication to the game to a whole new level. By practicing daily for hours on end I soon saw myself as the best player in my region and one of the best to come from my country. If I applied the same level of practice to my Fox that I had going forward with Metaknight there is no doubt in my mind id still be in the same position whether I played Mk or not. Pro Fox main TKD
would plow through my region, and I have no excuses or reasons that explain why I cant be as good as him. How many of you that complain about banning MK have mastered your character and can call yourself the best at them? Very few. And what is the reason why you havent reached that level? None(think its MK all you want). In the end, the better player will win, and when you find yourself losing to the character instead, sometimes you just need to accept what you could have done differently and come back prepared for the next match.
But enough of my story and back to the topic at hand; should Metaknight be banned? My answer is no. Ive seen Metaknights dominance at nationals, however, the people spearheading the pro-ban movement aside from a few exceptions have never proven themselves to be stagnated by Metaknight. We dont need to look at frame data, comprehensive tournament results, stop all the theory crafting and just look at the game itself for a second. We get so wrapped up in numbers and data that we dont actually use logic in our arguments. How many players that comprise these numbers are actually just really good, and better than their opponents? What strikes me as odd about this is these pro-ban players would lose regardless of character to people better than them but for some reason attribute all their saltiness to Metaknight and push for him to be banned. Banning Metaknight promotes players to find excuses for their lack of skill. How many probans that say Metaknight should be banned would lose to ADHDs Diddy
or Rich Browns Olimar
? I dont mean to sound elitist but what position are you in to tackle the issue of banning a character if you havent even come close to putting in the amount of work that a lot of top MK mains have?
There is no doubt that Metaknight is the best character, but he has not proven himself to be an unbeatable force that elevates players to high levels easily and effortlessly. Every pro MK main has put in the work needed to be at the level they are, when I watch matches of Mew2Kings
Metaknight, he is outplaying his opponent and the skill gap is noticeable. M2K has spoken of the thousands of hours he has put into the game to become best in the world. Can the same be said for the level of dedication that most pro-ban players have? The smash community despite being very nontraditional compared to other fighting games needs to accept the fact that there will always be a character that is better than others. Balance is not achieved by elimination of the best from the rest, in time players will all move to the next best character, because thats what people do,play to win. Why is it so foreign for the best character to be winning the most? The metagame is at a standstill not just because of Metaknight, Metaknight does NOT stop other characters from growing. We need to stop finding excuses for our losses and come to terms with the game we play.
