Comment answering these four questions:

1. Were you put off as a new player entering Brawl (or smash) by seeing large rulesets?

2. Would you have preferred the ruleset to be smaller instead of being fully detailed to handle all situations?

3. Did you have a hard time learning the ruleset?

4. How long did it take you to learn the ruleset well enough?

Made this blog out of curiosity after t1mmy's recent blog claimed new players in Smash have a hard time "learning the ropes" of the ruleset.

There is no written standard that tells TOs how they should go about posting results. There is nothing to tell TOs where to post them, how to post them, what they should include, etc. However, TOs need to at least learn how to post results properly. Some TOs just post top placings, or worse, nothing at all.

It does not do justice to players who do well at a tourney if you screw up posting results or don't post results at all. Not going to throw specific TOs under a bus, but there was a certain OOR tourney Bloodcross and me went to a couple months ago. We both placed top 3 at this, and yet no results were ever posted at all. Now it is as if that tourney did not exist to the players who placed well. That is not the least bit fair and does not reflect well on a TO or their series. You would be surprised how many people want to know the results of your tourney that did not attend it.

The following are standards that all TOs should be following when posting results. Some of it will only apply to Smashboards, as AllisBrawl either does it automatically or does not allow it.

Using Tio

If you're not using Tio for your events, you're doing something wrong. Not only is it a good idea because it is a very versatile program, but it is also easy to post results and save bracket images with Tio, as well as being able to upload results to Allisbrawl of course.

If for some reason you don't have Tio, get it here: http://allisbrawl.com/tio/ If you're scared of using Tio because you never used it before, just download it and run simulations in it and practice running a couple brackets messing with options. It is NOT hard, and it baffles me when I see TOs sometimes try to run events without knowing how to use Tio or what it's capable of.

Posting Results on Aib/Smashboards

After running your tourney and hopefully being smart and using Tio, you're going to want to post the results. It should not be optional. It is now considered an insult to players to not post results anywhere. So where do you post them? On AllisBrawl and Smashboards, of course. Smashboards has a Results Forum designed specifically for tourney results. AllisBrawl has a specific system for processing Tio files from an event where it will display full results of a tourney in detail on the original tourney's page.

Smashboards is considered more important for posting results after your tourney. AllisBrawl is good for keeping track of specific users results and such, but as for displaying your tourneys results, Smashboards should get precedence. If you advertised your tourney anywhere else that has a viable way to post results, you should post them there too.

Also, don't wait forever to post them. This is what really upsets me, is seeing results go for days without being put on at least Smashboards. Your tourney will be forgotten a week later, so post it the night of the tourney if you can. I can understand some TOs might be tired from being up for likely 24+ hours coming back from their tourney, but if you can't post it that night, post it the next day soon as you can. The longer you wait to post it, the less people will remember to check it and the less people that will see what happened at your tourney that may have been incredibly hyped. Anyone in NE can say I've always posted results the night of the tourney, if not then the morning the next day.

Post All the Events

Yet another problem with results postings that should be standard. Post ALL your events you had at your tourney. I don't care if you think Low Tiers, All Brawl, etc are all the worst events you've ever seen. That one Low Tier main in your region that probably has never beaten anyone of significance that wins your Low Tier event will probably feel like the happiest smasher for winning something, and it's incredibly unfair if they get no recognition for it by the TO just shrugging it off as a side event that wasn't important enough to list.

Character Usages & Player Tags

Character Usage should also be a standard. If not just for people like John#'s who keeps track of all this data, do it for character representation. Did a Ganon place top 5 at your tourney? You better let people know that a Ganon placed well by having that Ganon icon next to the player's name.

Unfortunately, AllisBrawl doesn't have a viable way to add character usages next to the name, so that can slide on aib. But on Smashboards, you can EASILY post it by putting the character name in between some colons. Here is an example: Fatal :Snake:. Simple. If you want to know what all the characters names are, click on "More" in the Smiles box when making the post. Smashboards translates the character name inside the colons into an image, to make it much easier for people to view your results thread. Worst case scenario, put it in parentheses so it's AT LEAST listed.

As for what constitutes character usage, you should only post the character that helped them advance in the set. For example, if Ally goes Captain Falcon against M2K and loses horribly, then he should not have Captain Falcon next to his name. He should also not get a Captain Falcon next to his name if he beats a new player. It should only be the ranked or notable players they beat that give them that character usage. There are some exceptions you need to make, such as if you want to list ALL players character usages, and not just top 10, but that should be a rather easy judgement call.

One last rant about results lists that shouldn't happen is letting top players have results posted with their joke tags without at least putting who that player really is in parentheses. If a player is doing this because they didn't want to be known for losing to someone, then that's too bad for them. Not doing this also can make your tourney's results look a little skewed.

Bracket Images

AllisBrawl does this for you, but Smashboards won't. It should now be a standard to post a bracket image for each event. Why? Simply because players want to see all the upsets that happened. If your best player loses to someone in winners but still wins the event, a simple listing of results won't show that upset, but a bracket image will. It can also show why a top player didn't place top 3.

If you don't know how to save bracket images and are using Tio, just go to the bracket and right click and then choose to save it as an image. Then simply upload that image to an image site (such as imgur.com) and then link to it on the Smashboards results thread or even let it display with img tags if you know how.

Misc

Some other things you may want to post are links to videos of matches from the tourney, payouts (for John#'s, I get lazy with this most of the time), and making sure your thread title for the results has the tourney name, where it took place (city, state), and the date. This helps people know what region it's from before even looking at the results.

Summary

So in case you're too lazy to read the full details for what you should post as a TO, here is the general summary:

Use Tio
Post Results on Smashboards & AllisBrawl
Post All Events at the tourney
Post Bracket Images
Post Character Usage & real player tags

While this is not forced in any way or a written standard, it should be the standard that you as a TO strive to accomplish.

All the ones I know of, lemme know if missing:

Username box on banner moves when you mouse over it.
Everyone able to recommend blogs
Everyone has League of Legends Avi
Can join the new LoL ladder (not sure how teams are assembled or if matches are possible in any way)
random skins (pink is new apparently or just a joke addition, and surprisingly not too shabby)
Swear words changed to "flour"
All videos on aib replaced with a different video
Some of the Trading Cards groups replaced with Fox or Final Destination
Usernames all changed to add a LoL type title to it.

Only complaint is the constant skin changes might be slowing down the site, at least for me. (this was fixed later on in the day)

Shoutouts to Ripple for recording it so I didn't have to.

No one else from NE has done this yet, so I'll do it. Here are all the matches I could find from NE players at Apex. If there are any more, let me know. Also let me know if one of you played on my Wii (You guys should know what it looks like by now) because I believe Ripple was recording on it the whole weekend and will upload eventually I assume (if he hasn't already), though I don't know his account.

So much hype. No idea what the **** is going on storyline wise yet, but considering Sora/Riku are supposed to be in some kind of "dream" world throughout the game, that explains why a bunch of dead characters are showing up in this. Might be a bunch of flashbacks as to how all the Org members became Org members.

The new Disney worlds look hype, specifically Notre Dame & Tron Legacy worlds look pretty hype.

Release date is March (in Japan).

Just got internet back today. I was one of the lucky ones in CT to have power during the whole time (some parts of my town and CT still do not have power). I took some pics around my house to show what the blizzard did to my trees. It was pretty crazy, it looked like a tornado came through...except that it only affected the trees.

Hard to see much in this pic.

This branch would have probably took out a window, awning, or even the roof if it weren't for the clothes line stopping it.

My neighbor's front yard trees, the one on the left pretty much splitting in half.

The CT tourney this weekend was cancelled, and I saw some comments saying things like "What, why?" or "Oh come on." Well this is why. You're probably thinking "Oh, big deal, so a quite a few branches in a backyard fell down." Well keep in mind...this was just my backyard. Everyone with trees in their yard had a yard that looked like this (minus the winter trees) after the blizzard. It was because the storm happened so early that the trees couldn't support the weight of the snow AND the leaves. And as it happens, many trees are within falling length of power lines, and that's exactly what happened.

Pretty crazy experience overall. Around my area, only one or two gas stations had power. They had lines going on for streets. Any fast food place that happened to have power was almost completely packed. The day after the blizzard, roads were blocked all over the place because of downed wires and tree branches.

Driving around at night was pretty creepy too, it was pitch black in the areas with absolutely no power. Saturday night was crazy as well, standing outside hearing tree branches crack right off of the trees. Fortunately no damage was done to my house, but I have a feeling the branches annihilated my already weak shed.

I dunno who else doesn't have power yet other than IcyLight who said he probably won't get it back until Monday, which is over a week of no power. I lost my cellphone signal Saturday night and didn't get it back until like Tuesday as well. Not sure why cell phone signals went down too, was really annoying to have no outside communication for a few days.

Kinda looks pretty hype. Really love the second song it played, sounds like they got a different composer which if the rest of the OST sounds like that I'd probably get this game just for the music alone. Battle system is pretty much identical to FFXIII, so if you hated that, it won't change. Not sure of story since can't understand it though.

While we're at it, here's a new trailer for Final Fantasy XIII Type-0: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_i3iepFSRg

For a PSP game, that's quite impressive.

Bugs me that for some reason they're riding out the FFXIII name. Back in like 2005-2006 it was just FFXIII, FFXIII Versus, and FFXIII Type-0 (formally Agito) announced. Now they have all of that AND FFXIII-2. And it looks like FFXIII-2 is coming out in December, whereas Versus has no release date yet...lulz

MK being banned was not the only thing that was changed in the ruleset. But I feel like almost everyone missed the other small edits due to the controversy over the MK ban. So I'll just state them here, followed by my explanation for them (don't quote me officially, it's mostly my explanation only, not the entire URC's):

#1. Pause is set to Off

This is to counter the Judo Vs Logic problem, which left nearly everyone with a bad taste in your mouth. What logic did was only morally wrong, the rules allowed him to take the win. It was still Judo's fault for pausing, but the easiest way to counter this is to just make it a standard to turn pause off.

The only real drawbacks are potentially bad setups with TVs going out during matches. In this case, a TO can make a pretty quick judgement call on whether or not the match should be restarted. But it's incredibly rare anyway, as are other reasons for pausing. For those people who need to pause to reset your controller, you don't need to pause to reset it. And you can also check the C-Stick on the menus in Brawl ahead of time. You also might want to make sure no one starts 99 stock matches for warmup (hi M2K), as you'll be forced to restart the Wii with pause off, or wait until time runs out.

If both players ignore or forget to turn pause off and a pause happens, the TO will make the call on how to handle it. (If both players agree to keep playing if it's a neutral pause then I doubt the TO will interject).

#2. Coaching rule slightly edited

New rule: During gameplay, any coaching parties must remain a finite distance determined by the TO away from the players in order to give players equal access to all coached information. Ear-side coaching is prohibited during games, but acceptable between games. Failure to adhere to this will lead to punishment at the TO's discretion, which could include the coach's removal from the venue or a call to replay the game that the coaching interfered with.

We acknowledge crowd coaching being really hard to almost impossible to enforce at large tourneys, so this explains more specifically that ear-side coaching is not allowed. With crowd coaching, at least both players can hear it, so it's less problematic, even though it's still technically unfair to the person being coached against. But realistically with the old rule we can't really say "Hey entire crowd of 30 people, get away from this hype match so you don't crowd coach."

#3. Resolving Pools Ties

This was just added so TOs have something to look to when pool ties happen, rather than be like "Well I dunno, probably this way."

I'm not going to post the whole rule here, but read it on the ruleset page: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=301032
