I've only been playing competitively for about a year,

but I've noticed something about older players.
Most of the people who experienced the "Golden Age" of Brawl (in my experience) seem to care very little about the scene, new players, or the game itself. This may come off as sounding harsh, but it's just something I've noticed so bear with me.
Before Apex 2012, I heard from a lot of players that they were going to quit. It seemed like their time was over or they had just lost interest. Things have obviously been a lot less hyped since '09 (from the videos I've seen and stories I've been told) so I can see how 4 years of playing this game can have it's toll on a player. It just seems like no one wants to host tournaments, introduce or help new players, or worry about anything other than raking in a few bucks from MMs.
There are definitely
some people who are fighting very hard to promote SSBB and keep the game running strong, but why should there be so much weight on so few people? Amateur brackets, coaching and reduced venue fees for new players are all good ways to bring in new people, but there's a huge gap between veterans and noobs, in skill level and communication. Most players don't seem to want to take on new players and teach them things.
I was very lucky to find a good coach last year.
There are probably hundreds if not thousands of casual smash players out there who have the potential to play smash competitively. Even if they suck, they just might want to have some fun.
As I've said, I'm not blaming anyone. Nor am I asking for answers. This is just my observation based on my experiences. Being a fairly new player, I pay attention to the smash resources around me and there are few. The best players of Norcal have helped me out a lot, but they're just a few people with lives of their own. Everyone has knowledge to share and a bit of time to share it.
At the end of the day, I can see how people might not be excited about the game anymore. After a long time of playing, the rewards might not be the same. I just wish there was a second wind. I wish people cared just a little bit more.
eh. i'm going to keep playing regardless of what happens. i want to beat Mike Haze someday.
