SSB4 News: Character Rumors (confirmed as fake)

Boy, I'm glad I added the "possibly" to the title "SSB4 NEWS: Characters confirmed (possibly) by Sakurai himself!" Meah, moving on.

2 days ago, a smash bros. fan named Killer Chris wanted to let Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series, who is developing two new smash bros games (one on the Wii U, one on the 3DS) of a few characters he wanted. Like a typical fan, he wrote something on Sakurai's twitter. Here is what he wrote:

For those of you who can't read Japanese, this says"Be sure to include Geno from Super Mario RPG, Isaac from Golden Sun and Mega Man."

This was delivered to Sakurai. Then, something happened. Something huge.

Sakurai responded with the following message in response to this.

So, let us translate this, and we get...

2 out of 3 you say=??? WOAW! ACTUAL NEWS REGARDING SMASH WII U/3DS!

This merely confirms that 2 out of 3 of them are... something. Probably in the game, whether as playable or non-playable characters. That's what I assume at least. So let's assume I am right.

While this could mean Isaac is merely an Assist Trophy character again like he is in Brawl, this definitely would confirm that either Mega Man, Geno, or both are playable. Both characters are owned by 3rd party companies.

Mega Man is owned by Capcom of course.

Geno, while only appearing in Mario games (as a playable character in "Super Mario RPG" and a cameo in "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga"), is owned by Square Enix, which (then as Square Soft) created him as part of Super Mario RPG.

I don't see a reason Nintendo would get both of those characters for cameos, especially Mega Man.

And to makes things odder, about 30 minutes afterwards, Sakurai DELETED THE POST! Does this make it... a cover up=???

This reminds me all too well of this video, originally released on Nintendo's Japanese site as a quick look into Brawl's sticker system a few weeks before Brawl came out. If you look at the bottom character icons, you will notice a few previously characters that weren't revealed: Ness (then previously thought to be cut), Jigglypuff, and Lucario (obviously a newcomer). This video was later removed by Nintendo for this accidental leak.

However, this comment was clearly done on purpose. And it clearly has an intent. An intent we can't be sure of... yet.

IGN or anyone working with or related to IGN, if for some reason unknown to me you are reading this, please e-mail interview Sakurai ASAP like you have done in the recent past! The same goes for other gaming media site if they could get such an interview or answer. Possibly even something from Nintendo themselves at this moment would be fine.

Something tells me we'll know... BY OR AT E3 2012! All I know is... I'm excited now!

Megaman and Geno are two of the most requested characters as well, so this isn't super surprising. Still really cool. I find it strange that Sakurai would randomly reply to a message like that and give away information.

I think this was done with a clear purpose-to hype the hell out of the two games by giving us a typical "answer that isn't a answer but is a answer" Sakurai response to a question. Kinda like how when talking about Lucas' moveset Sakurai mentioned (on the Dojo) "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar." This whole thing smells fishy to me... but I like it. Mega Man is my most wanted smash bros potential newcomer, and I'm a big fan of Super Mario RPG and Golden Sun. Needless to say, I'm conflicted, confused, and my mind is blown. Quite frankly, why Sakurai would pick one random fan's comment to answer is beyond me. Perhaps it was because Sakurai could answer it cryptically. The man always seemed to be an unsolved puzzle that keeps evolving.

He posts a lot of random answers to random stuff, and has never brought up Smash Wii U or 3DS on it, other than when he started development and in his title. He does, however: -Answer questions about Kid Icarus: Uprising, his latest game. -Do gaming mini-rant stuff, like defend Street Fighter IV. -Show off all the free games he gets (he got a few from Kojima and Miyamoto themselves). -Talk about some of the things he sees, such as the recent solar eclipse (which was awesome by the way). -Showing off his ridiculous video game collection. He has probably hundreds of Virtual Console titles. And stuff like that. Sakurai chose the "perfect" time to not just talk about Smash Wii U and 3DS (for the first time on Twitter), but bring attention to them. I expect this to be on most, if not all of the major video game outlet sites within the next 24 hours. This could ultimately mean we could get a trailer or something huge at E3 involving a new smash. HYPE!!! :D

They still fit my criteria of having 3rd-party characters in the game, and Square Enix could possibly end up with more of its own original characters this way. Still, although I like him, sometimes I think Geno gets overhyped too much, kinda like Zero in Mega Man X or Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII. Nintendo could've teamed with SE again to make more games with him in it to justify the hype a bit more. If he does show up in this game, he could end up getting the same treatment Pit got afterwards.

The fat, manly one did blend into SFxT a bit better, though. And a true Mega Man (X) did finally show up in Project X Zone. Maybe that means Capcom is changing up how they handle him again.
