Wii U Pro Controller: Serious Discussion

WARNING: I WILL GIVE OUT INFRACTIONS FOR PEOPLE DEBATING ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT SOMEONE STOLE IDEAS FROM THE OTHER COMPANY. NOBODY CARES WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THAT. This is for serious discussion ONLY.

That being said. How do you honestly feel about this, aesthetically.

Overall, I'm extremely happy that Nintendo opted for a serious controller to compromise for the lack of GameCube controller ports, but I don't feel like the layout makes sense.

For shooters, sure. I think that the stick layout will probably actually give you more control as far as those go (and those are pretty much the only games that truly rely on 2 sticks) but other than that I just feel like the stick placement is weird.

I think I'd have preferred it to have a Gamecube styled button layout on the right side, but I am OK with a Classic Controller layout. I just don't personally like the sticks being both on the top... Looks.... Funny.

It looks like it's going to be really bad for playing Smash.

^ I totally agree 100% but to also add to it, I don't really get/understand two joysticks, lol. I'm so much used to only one~

Yeah, the sticks on top looks kinda.. idk.. weird..
Not to mention, it might be a bit weird, like what if you gotta use both sticks and then use the buttons real quick?
You might get confused on your first try.
And you might find a hard time getting used to it as well.
I would've preferred the GC button Style rather than this one.

I like the fact that you can actually use a controller like this though, they need to bring the good way of gaming with an actual controller back.
hotdogturtle wrote at 10:32 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
Two sticks are necessary because shooters have complete control over the industry.

As far as using this controller in any other games, the buttons look kind of far away from where your thumb would most likely be positioned in a neutral position. It looks like they should be closer to the handle.

^ and about this post, they should've just kept the shooters to the "A" and "B" buttons, lol. The way that real classic gamers are used to~

Maybe they're gonna use Shooter games a different way?
Like maybe L or R buttons for shooting and the other buttons for selecting weapons and such?
hotdogturtle wrote at 10:36 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
And with BOTH sticks being on the top (Gamecube and 360 had one on top and one on bottom, and PS2/3 had both on bottom), it looks like your hands will be pretty high up on the controller, and it will be more difficult to switch from the stick to the buttons quickly, compared to all the other controllers that have the buttons on top.

Still, this may not end up being the final design (unless they said it was, but it shouldn't be). This is only the first version that they've revealed. Need I bring up the boomerang first PS3 controller?
E.Nigma wrote at 10:38 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
yeah but with E3 being only 2 days away (and the launch of the console being only 4 or 5 months later) I don't know if they'd ahve time to make a massive overhaul on a controller like that.

^ Oh ya, L and R buttons also would make sense for shootin' games too.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks it'll be fine...

It's a little strange looking, but I don't really forsee any real problems using it aside from actually getting used to it.

Yeah but I meant Nintendo's E3 presentation. Mah bad
DMO wrote at 11:17 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
I have the same problem with the gamepad as I do with the Pro controller. The placement swap of the right control stick and the buttons just seems extremely awkward to me. Perhaps it's because I've never used a controller with a layout like that, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'd emphasize how uncomfortable that might feel on the gamepad, but it would be rather misleading to pretend that I've even tried something comparatively better.

It's kind of stage that Nintendo came up with a "normal" black controller.

Vermanubis wrote at 11:29 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
Nintendo's recent design choices baffle the **** out of me.

The 3DS's analog stick is stiff, and the D-pad, in conjunction with its tiny size, requires you hyper-extend your thumb which mitigates precision (I seriously cannot play Contra 4 on 3DS)

With this, the layout is perfect... except the profound retardation it must've taken to opt for a high-up right analog. I've come to learn in recent times just how essential good controls and mappings are--in my opinion, Ninty dropped the ball once again. (That isn't to say that all the others haven't as well, but I hold Ninty in much higher regard than Sony or Microsoft)

Nintendo has always had their buttons in that order. It's the traditional Nintendo controller set up.

I think it will be a little awkward to get used to but it should be fine. I'm just glad my GameCube controllers can finally retire.
BSP wrote at 11:43 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
I'll try it out I guess. It's going to be weird, but I think we'll get it down.

It is going to feel weird at first but it won't be one I get used to it. Nothing that a little control customization on the game won't fix.
waldorf2007 wrote at 11:54 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
fine with the layout, but the big problem is the wireless only thing. the port at the top of the controller is near identical to that of the PS3 controller, it charges and establishes what controller is set to what. real trouble at tournies, like having a ton of wavebirds.
-Champ- wrote at 11:55 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
It needs to resemble more NINTENDO. personally I think that gcc style would be best
Pokedude wrote at 11:59 PM on Jun 3, 2012 :
I'll give that controller a try if the WiiU game pad doesn't work well for me. It also has somewhat of the same style of the Gamecube controller, not in shape, but the buttons. I'll buy it when the new Brawl is announced.:D

It looks funny, but in all reality Nintendo has already stated that they strive for "unique" and i think this layout is as unique as they can get for a pro controller.

Hmm. I miss the GCN controller... As much as I would have preferred something along those lines, I have to admit that the X360 controller is probably my second favorite serious gaming controller to date, so I suppose I'd say it was sort of a smart move to... go that route. Serious gaming controller, I mean. D: (Please don't infract me .__.)

I appreciate uniqueness for what it is, but I think I might have preferred something more... practical. I just hope that extra stick where my buttons usually are serves a particular purpose, and really, I can't say how much I like or dislike it until I have a chance to try it for myself, eh.
Kimidori wrote at 12:21 AM on Jun 4, 2012 :
OMG Nintendo is stupid they need to just release some kind of adapter or something so that a GCN controller or wavebird can be used.
southpaw24 wrote at 12:21 AM on Jun 4, 2012 :
i'd rather the stick on the right be below the buttons but I don't think the layout will hinder gameplay in the long run. its just we're gunna have to relearn with a new controller, and it'll be annoying at first.
Keitaro wrote at 12:24 AM on Jun 4, 2012 :
Has anybody ever played with the Classic Controller Pro??? It is amazing and very similar to this besides the switching of the right analog and the buttons. Regardless either controller will likely be great for smash, I'm sure of it. Classic Controller Pro already is really good for smash imo and is much lighter.
Parace L.sia wrote at 12:25 AM on Jun 4, 2012 :
Just a whole new way of playing smash all over again imo.

Functionally, my Gravis Eliminator Aftershock PC gamepad has more or less the same layout as the Wii U Pro controller, which I use to play SSB64 via PJ64. It's not particularly uncomfortable.
