Why is the original so great? Here is why:

Super Smash Brothers (SSB) was first released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 (N64). It featured a bunch of Nintendo's all star characters. These characters were Mario, Luigi, Link, Samus, Ness, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Captain Falcon, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Donkey Kong. Of all these characters four of them had to be unlock: Ness, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and Luigi. All the starter characters have a home stage based on their games plus a hidden stage Mushroom Kingdom, which was an old-school Mario stage. SSB was (and still is) one of the most unique fighting games in that you must build your opponent's damage percent so that they fly further off the screen until they either can't make it to the stage or get killed in the blastzones. The original was groundbreaking and very popular game. While it didn't get into the tournament scene, it still won the hearts of many. Now a days, it is ignored very much but it is still out there. Most people now a days play either by dusting off the old N64 and playing with some buddies, or they play online with a PC using emulators like Project64k (PJ64k) or Mupen64k. SSB is a very easy game to pick up, and most people don't realize that there exists more advanced play, almost as much as Melee. For example, Z-canceling helps to get rid of pesky landing lag which can help do further combos or defend oneself from a counter attack. Another example are the amount of combos one can do using certain moves to pop an opponent into certain spots and taking advantage of the hitstun to follow up with another attack. Also, unlike Melee and Brawl, I personally feel the game is much more balanced in terms of character balance. The bottom tier characters (Samus and Link) can do pretty well against top tier characters (Pikachu and Kirby). That about sums up why SSB is one of the best games you will find. One last note is that without SSB, there would be no Melee or Brawl icon_smile
