Japanese Ledge Grab Rule?
Quote:
Ledge Grab Rule - "You are not allowed to grab the ledge more than 70 times in any individual tourney match. If you do, you automatically forfeit that match."

Hint: In the victory/defeat screen after the match, you can check the stats to see how many times each player grabbed the ledge. If someone accuses the other of excessively planking/ledge stalling, you simply need to check the end stats.

Apparently the Japanese already use this rule in their ruleset. What do you guys think about this rule? Pros? Cons? Discuss.

Obviously the intent of the rule is to prevent ledgestalling/planking in matches, but is it a good rule? And if it is a good rule, could/should we implement it into our ruleset.

...Actually, I'm not ENTIRELY sure this is genuine, but I heard of it from someone I trust, but I'm sure the people here at AiB are in a better position to figure the legitimacy out anyway.

I think it's a pretty decent rule. Only being able to grab the ledge 70 times won't exactly prevent Planking(which I believe is fine), but it'll prevent stalling.

I think 70 is adaquate for a match. If you use more your opponet can still give u the win if he doesn't feel like he should have won.

I guess its decent but I do not think it would affect anyones gameplay. It might be more of a distraction than help since people may be thinking about the ledge more than their opponent. I would oppose it because I personally think it does nothing to improve the brawl metagame we have.

Agreed.

@hichez, I'd like to meet the person that gives their opponent a win in a tourney because of this rule. Especially if they just lost.

Most likely, if you exceeded this rule, then you really did have a good period of edge time, and it'd be easy to say you were planking/stalling or the like. And yeah I suppose someone with a good amount of honor could do that but if he has that much honor he may as well just back off and let you back onto the stage.

This sounds good on paper and possibly in principle, but it is just not practical. It may prevent planking, but it may also hinder many edge-oriented games, or even other styles that are not considered illegal.

Also, what happens when both people go over the limit? What if they both go over the limit exactly the same number of times?

It's a stupid rule. Who the **** is going to sit there for every match and count to 70 just to see if someone is bending a dumb rule? I sure wouldn't.

It doesn't help that individual match, as you don't see that screen until AFTER

70 is a bit too much, a round 50 would be better IMO.

I think it will prevent stalling, but since some people are already in the habit of edge-hopping, some people do it without thinking.
~There are many types of monsters in this world. Monsters who will not show themselves and who cause trouble, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood. And monsters who always tell lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance. They are much more cunning than other monsters. They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart. They eat, even though they've never experienced hunger. They study, even though they have no interest in academics. They seek friendship, even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such a monster, I would likely be eaten by it. Because in truth, I am that monster~

counts every time you touch the edge, but there is no way your going to get 70 without planking

Couldn't planking be considered stalling, therefore disqualifying the planker, and making this rule obsolete?

Planking is when you better your position.

Stalling is when you do something that renders the game completely unplayable (ie IDC).

you seem to be forgetting a metaknight counter, but its understandable since like 10 people play him total (me being one)
Dk wrecks metaknight, hes got more priority, more range, and waaayyy more power. one top of this, ftilt hits through mach tornado.

Yeah, I got a thread going on over at smashboards about this, and its been a pretty heated discussion over there. Pretty much every argument and counter argument has been brought up. For reference:
7:00 minute match-in order to grab the ledge 70 times, thats every 6 seconds
8:00minue match- 6.86 seconds.

The rule only applies when the clock runs out.

The Japanese also play with a 10:00 minute time limit.

A match is best 2 out of 3, am I correct?
So they would be adding it up after 2 / 3 games right..?
That's ****ing dumb.
I'm not in favor of planking, but I'm almost certain I'm tethering onto the ledge more than 20 or so times per GAME.
