Note: Modifying any image with
BrawlBox is done through exactly the same process.
Character Select Portraits Open
BrawlBox Open
Common5.pac in BrawlBox - you should now be viewing 5 Archives. What you want here is
sc_selcharacter_en Open that, then open the Archive
char_bust_tex_lz77 In here you will find a large series of "misc data" brres files. In each of these there is a folder for palettes and a folder for Textures. You will have to search through each
MiscData[#] Brees package to find which character you want. For this tutorial I'm going to use Mario who is
MiscData[0] Open his texture folder and select any of the
MenSelchrFaceB.### files that you wish. BrawlBox has a built in viewer so that you can see the image that you are wishing to modify.
Select any one of these images, right click on it, "Extract" and save as a .PNG file.
At this point, you can simply open your favorite photo editing program, preferably Photoshop or Gimp, and modify the image to your liking.
Remember the final image has to be sized to 128*160 pixels.
Now simply right click on the image you wanted to replace in BrawlBox - Replace - Choose your new image and hit OK. Your new CSP should be available in your
common5.pac Now your only step is to put your
Common5.pac where it belongs on your SD card so that it will load properly. Please refer to the Dynamic SD Loader thread for this information.
Note: With BrawlBox, all TGA files that you may have recieved with textures that you've downloaded WILL NOT LOAD into BrawlBox. You will have to open them in your photo editing program of choice, save them as .PNG files, then replace the one in the
common5.pac with the new .PNG file.
After Battle Portraits These are the portraits that show up after battle on the results screen. They are exactly the same as the ones that you want to put in your
common5.pac file. They are located in the
menu/common/char_bust_tex/ directory and are individual .brres files for each character. Luckily enough, they hold the portraits for ALL of a character's textures so they're all conveniently located in one place unlike the battle portraits that are so scattered and numbered so horribly. They won't take nearly as long to replace as the CBP's - Here you can replace all the portraits for a single character in one opening of the program rather then have to open up 400+ files to change them.
Note: Here's a good trick for those who are relatively comfortable with BrawlBox now. After you've modified the common5.pac file for new CSP's you can open another BrawlBox program and use this quick trick in order to modify your after Battle portraits faster. Open common5 with BrawlBox and where you've already modified lets say all 6 of mario's CSP's, select the .brres package named
MiscData[0] and right click it, export it to a file in its .brres format.
CHANGE THE COMPRESSION TO "NONE" - Then you can Just rename it to the appropriate after battle portrait.
Mario, being
MiscData[0] in common5, would be
MenSelchrFaceB000.brres Link, being
MiscData[2] in common5, would be
MenSelchrFaceB020.brres Peach, being
MiscData[12] in common5, would be
MenSelchrFaceB120.brres Snake, being
MiscData[45] in common5, would be
MenSelchrFaceB450.brres Put those
SelchrFaceB###.brres in your SD card in the corresponding directory.
Character Battle Portraits These files are located in the
info/portrite/ directory. These files basically consist souly of the .brres file. When you open it you only get a single palette and a single image for a single texture for that specific character. Simple enough, replace it with whatever new 48*56 image you wish to see in game. There are a ton of these though. There's something like 460 of them, so it will take you a while to modify them. I've personally never seen the thrill of having custom battle portraits but some people love them so if you're that dedicated then I suppose there's no reason to stop you.
Character Select Icons They are all located in the
sc_selcharacter_en -> MiscData[70] -> Textures -> MenSelchrChrFace.### These icons are to be resized to 80*56 images - I recommend leaving the top 20 pixels to the top of a character's head (hat, hair, whatever) in order to keep the character's name from covering up their face when the icon is displayed in the character select screen.
Character Select Names If you wish to change the character's NAME that is displayed on the Icon, modify the
MenSelchrChrNmS.### file that corresponds with the icon's ### - This will allow you to display any name that you want to on the Character Select Screen.
These images can be resized to anything between 14 and 24 height, and the longest name I've ever seen was 104 pixels in width (Zero Suit Samus) but all of these name files pretty much shrink themselves to the right size in order to appear correctly on the roster. I modified quite a few of them and changed their sizes quite a bit before and they all shrink to the appropriate size, no size is character specific so it doesn't matter if you make the name a little bit bigger. I'd suggest keeping it close to the original sizes though.
Map Select Icons & Map Select Portraits These are both located in the same place. This file is located in the
/menu2/ directory named "
sc_selmap.pac"
Open this file, find the
MiscData[80] .brres package and look in the texture folder. Icons are named "
MenSelmapIcon.##" and Portraits are named "
MenSelmapPrevbase.##"
These items are modified the same way as any other image in BrawlBox. Just use the "replace" feature and you're done. Save and stick it back in the menu2 directory of your SD card.
Note: Icons are sized 64*56 pixels, and portraits are sized 176*176 pixels. Keep it the same size. You can also edit the stage's "mark", stage's "name" and the character's "emblems" in this file too though there really isnt much point in it unless you're replacing stages with different ones forever. It is pretty cool to have custom screenshots of your stages placed on the map select screen though
