Seriously this is a huge spoiler don't scroll past this point:
I do blame those people, but that doesn't do any good because stupid isn't something you can fix. This entire deal isn't just aimed at EA, either, this is the kind of repercussion any company can, should, and will get when they pull crap like this, and it should be a message to the entire industry.
Point two: To say that EA has "earned" enough money to act however they want is wrong. Customer satisfaction should always be the number one priority to any business because the customers are where the money is coming from. You go out and start a business with the mindset that as soon as you earn enough money, to hell with the customer, and you'll either go out of business or eventually be in a PR ****house like EA is in right now.
I'm not saying that EA or any other company should listen to customers so much that they start making stupid decisions, but really, a responsible company does not get presented with an award for being awful and then retaliate with a smug-*** comment about how at least they aren't as bad as weapons manufacturers or BP, and then refer to how their games are "award winning", even though almost everyone knows any awards given to games are from heavily biased sources. When it gets to that point, that's when you say "Oh well damn, we didn't know you felt THAT strongly about it. We'll stop doing everything wrong with the industry now."
You're right, I should fix my comment. EA
is earning enough money right now to act however they please. They obviously feel no financial threat. Customer satisfaction should be number one when your customers will stop paying for your product if you upset them. If EA can make smug comments and pull lousy shenanigans with their games and still pull in a great profit, then they have absolutely no reason to care about the customer or their PR. None.
If things go as they should, EA will feel the backlash, and badly. But the backlash needs to hit their wallets. Words alone will not do them any harm, nor will awards, internet rants, nasty emails, etc. The wallet is where it counts, and if people are going to send a message EA will listen to, they will do it with their pockets. This is big business, where the bottom line is ALL that matters.
