You definitely earned it. Start feeling good about yourself.

Anyways, staying on topic, I believe it depends on the theme of the RPG that sucks people into liking them. I'm not exactly a huge RPG fan, but I've really enjoyed all the Mario themed RPGs. I do like the fact that I can control my entire party to be as offensively powerful as possible (I really like offense). It can be challenging to work with just one strategy, but it's rewarding if it works to your advantage.

People like RPGs because you have to think about what to do next and how to react. Instead of mashing the A button over and over again, you really have to think about what to do. Sorry for creating a Zombie Thread, I was new.

So I didn't really read the first page, but isn't this really more about turn based games in general, as opposed to RPGs?

And if so, then it's really up to preference. Some people enjoy having time to pick their actions, some to order units instead of "being" them, etc. People still played chess even after football was invented.

for the record I don't agree with anything I said three years ago. It also appears that my anger towards life and ability to be overdramatic are inversely proportional when posting on the internet.

Now, if you're looking for a non-turned based RPG that doesn't involve button-mashing, the "Tales of " series in an interesting take. No random battles (for most recent games, anyway), you set which moves you want to use as you learn them, and the entire flow of battle, friends & allies, are all attacking at the same time rather than taking turns.

It's always rather story-heavy, though. Some people enjoy compelling stories, while others just want to get into the action. I also happen to love every Mario RPG game to date, they're easy to get into. Hell, I even started playing Final Fantasy X the other day. Some people enjoy the intensity of how complex Fire Emblem's chess-like battles get (I KNOW I do), and others are attracted to the colorful and inviting world of Kingdom Hearts... I for one am not picky with RPGs at all. Maybe because their worlds are so much more facinating than our own. xD

But yeah... Every game has its own flavor, and everybody's got their own tastes, you know?

I agree with Tide, mostly about the "Tales of" series.  I adore everything they did with it.  Not to mention the battle system, and let's be honest what more could we want from an RPG than a new and interesting battle system?  BC has already pointed out that he's not that interested into a story and if I read correctly - he really wants a game that will entertain him, and in Mario's case: comedy and sharp writing.  More games need both, I mean yeah the story matters, but what does it matter if the gamer isn't entertained?

Well, part of why I like turn-based RPGs is because they are awesome for pick-up-and-play. If I want to play a shooter or adventure game, I need to set aside a good hour or so to really immerse myself and have an enjoyable play session (and that's assuming I can save at any time, which isn't always the case). With a turn-based, even if I only make a few moves in one turn or, in the case of Pokemon, have one or two battles, and then have to abruptly save, I still feel like I got something done. And I don't need to have my eyes glued to the screen either; I can look away whenever I need, and when I look back nothing's changed. It's the same advantage of playing a board game, except you don't have to worry your little brother is going to throw a football at the table and knock the pieces over.

They also offer lots of choice, or at least the illusion of choice, which I'm a sucker for. Even if some choices end up being overall better than others, you can usually beat the game on normal without optimizing your units, which is nice. I don't want to admit it but I'll say this: I like turn-based RPGs because the normal mode is usually very forgiving, and I suck at RPGs really.
