All is Brawl welcomes you to the
Brawl Spring Doubles ladder!
Our rankings ladder works like many other ranking systems: you earn Skill Points for beating opponents
and rise and fall in our overall rankings based on your points. By bringing structure and risk/reward
to Brawl's online play we hope to make an exciting and competitive environment for all Smashers.
Through Microsoft's
TrueSkill
ranking system, we bring the same system used by XBOX Live games to the Smash community for world-class
accuracy in rankings. And we wrap it all up with the
only complete matchmaking experience on any
Smash site: our custom chat room, where you can find & challenge opponents, report scores, and leave
feedback within a friendly chat environment. There's no easier way to start Brawling!
Before you start playing, however, you need to review the following rules.
General Rules:
- All players are responsible for checking the rules regularly, as rules may change
without notice.
- By joining the Match-making chat, or by taking part in the ladder, you acknowledge the current
rule set, and agree to abide by said rules in participation of the ladder.
- You may not join any ladder with more than one account. You may not withdraw your account from the ladder, make a new account, and then
join the ladder with that new account. In fact, the site Terms of Service states that you cannot
have two accounts... period. Any person in breach of this will be banned from the site without hesitation.
- While trash talk is part of the game, any major unsportsmanlike conduct, or verbal abuse to
another player or the staff will not be tolerated. This is on a case-by-case basis, but punishment can
lead from a warning to a permanent ban from the ladder.
- Do not spam or flood the Match-making chat room. Offenders may be banned.
- Chat room moderators will be on at most times to handle disputes. If you have a problem with
another user, do not take it into your own hands. PM a chat moderator and have them resolve the situation.
Chat moderators have bold names in the user list. You may need to visit the Free Play
or Social chat rooms if a moderator is not visiting Match-making chat.
- In the event that a match is started with incorrect settings (no time limit, items on, no team attack, etc.):
- Which ever player notices the discrepency must suicide their stocks and report back to the ladder
chat room to explain their objection. This objection must be made during the individual game or else
you forfeit your right to object.
- Do your best to get in contact with your opponent and tell them of the improper rules. The host must reset the rules
to the official ladder rule set and restart the match on the same stage with the same characters.
- If you notice the incorrect rules in the second or third game of a set, the results of the previous games stay as recorded.
Do not restart the entire set in this situation.
- It is the player's responsibility to know the entirety of the ladder rule set as laid out in this document and to
file objections to incorrect rules at the appropriate time (i.e. immediately).
- DO NOT CONTACT STAFF MEMBERS ABOUT MATCH DISPUTES. PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
UNDER "DISPUTES AND DISHONOR" IF YOU HAVE MATCH CONFLICTS.
Cheating:
The following actions are considered
cheating and will result in penalties when you are caught:
- Giving or accepting a win without actually playing a match. (THERE AIN'T NO SUCH THING AS A FREE WIN.)
- Reporting an in-person match as a win on the ladder, even if both players agree to it. The ladder is
for online play only.
- Reporting a match for another ladder, website, tournament (online or offline), or any other source of competition other
than the All is Brawl ladder. All ladder matches must be scheduled, played, and reported through the All is Brawl
ladder chat room service.
- To reiterate, all match-making must happen within the AiB ladder chat rooms.
Inability to follow this rule will lead to one warning and the next offense will result in ineligibility to participate in playoffs.
- Creating a second account to play on the ladder. You may not have more than one account on the site.
- Any attempt at score boosting, host lagging, or major glitching to gain skill points.
- No substituting of any kind is allowed! Regardless of an opponent approving or not, if we find out that you
had someone or something else play for you and/or your teammate you will be disqualified.
- If your partner is banned from the site, then you are unable to participate in doubles ladder, and you cannot substitute your partner.
For instance, if your partner gets banned from the site for a month, then your team can not participate in ladder for that month.
- You cannot play against family members, or anyone in the same house, but you can play with them as a team.
Challenges and Playing Matches:
- If you accept a challenge from another player, the match must be played unless:
- One person cancels the match within three (3) minutes of the challenge being accepted.
- Both players submit a cancelation request as part of the reporting process.
- Rules for canceling matches are outlined below.
- Once a challenge is accepted, a Private Chat window will open allowing you to communicate privately
with your opponent. Use this chat to decide on a host and exchange friend codes. If no agreement can be
formed on hosting, the Player with the lowest TrueSkill score will host games 1 and 3.
The higher ranked player will host game two.
- It is the responsibility of both players to report results on a challenge. You have one hour
after the challenge is accepted to report a score. If only one player reports on a challenge, that player's
report will be used as truth in determining an outcome. A challenge will be dropped completely if neither
player reports within one hour.
Brawl Rule Set:
All matches
must be played using the following rule set:
- General:
- Three (3) stock.
- Eight (8) minute time limit.
- All items off.
- If time runs out during a match, Sudden Death will never be played. Use the following rules instead:
- If one player has more stock remaining than the other, the victor will be the player
with the most stock.
- If the stock count is tied, then the player with the lowest damage percent
wins the round.
- If Sudden Death is forced by one player using a "suicide" move (Kirby/Dedede Swallow,
Ganondorf Flame Choke, Bowser Bomb, Wario Bite, etc.), then whoever initiated the suicide
move wins the game.
- If both the percent and stock are tied at the end of a match, a one (1) stock, two (2) minute
match will be played. This match must be played on the same level as the game prior and with the same
characters. Whoever wins this 1-stock playoff wins the game.
- Metaknight's Infinite Cape glitch is banned.
- Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in
a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary
about accidentally triggering one of these effects.
- Stalling is banned. Stalling: The act of deliberately avoiding any and all conflict so that one may make the game unplayable.
Any infinite chain grabs must end quickly after 300% has been reached so as to prevent excessive stalling. No player must grab the
ledge more than 40 times in a game, with the exception of a player using the Ice Climbers, for whom the limit is raised to 60 ledge grabs.
If, and only if, the timer runs out and either player has exceeded the total ledge grabs, they lose the game, regardless of stocks and percents. If both players exceed the ledge-grab limit, then the usual time-out rules will apply.
- The first match of a game must be played on a Neutral Stage:
- Battlefield
- Final Destination
- Lylat Cruise
- Smashville
- Yoshi's Island
- Stage striking will be used to select the first stage. The lower ranked player will strike first,
choosing a stage from the neutrals list to remove from consideration for the first round. The higher
ranked player chooses two stages to remove from consideration for the first round. The lower ranked
player then eliminates one of the two remaining stages from consideration, and the first round is played
on the last remaining stage.
- The loser of the first game will then ask the winner to ban a stage. They must do so, or their counterpick
is invalidated. The loser may then choose a stage for the second round. This process is repeated for game 3, if necessary.
- When choosing a stage, you may pick any Neutral stage, or any of the counter pick stages listed:
- Battleship Halberd
- Castle Siege
- Delfino Plaza
- Frigate Orpheon
- Pokémon Stadium (Melee)
- Any map may be played as long as BOTH players agree to it.
- You may NOT pick a stage that you have already won on for your counter-pick unless your
opponent agrees.
- If the winning player fails to announce their change in character exit out of that game immediately.
- The game will still be played on the same stage.
- The winner from the previous is now locked into their character.
- The loser from the previous match may now reselect their character.
- King Dedede must dash before re-grabbing an opponent after a down-throw, unless the situation would allow King Dedede
to regrab his opponent because of a facet of the stage, as in the case of a wall infinite.
-
- Infinite grabs (aside from the earlier mentioned situation with King Dedede), jab locks, laser locks, suicides, wall infinites,
etc. are not banned. Do not dispute a match that you lost to the above tactics.
Doubles-specific Rules:
All
doubles rules follow the standards set by rules above, with this addition:
- Team attack must be ON for all teams matches. If your opponent is hosting and Team Attack is not turned on,
suicide your team's stocks and report back to the chat room, telling the host to turn it back on. The game must be replayed
on the same stage in this case.
To create and manage your team:
- Click the "Join Ladder" link on the ladder portal page to create a team with yourself
as the team leader. Do not create a team if your partner has already made one.
- As the team leader, you may invite another player to join your team from the "My ladder options" link on the portal.
- Each player may only be part of one team at a time. If you would like to join with someone else, you must disband your current team
from the ladder portal. If you disband your team you will lose all your ranking points. You will not be able to create a new team
with the person you just disbanded.
Important: if your partner is banned from the site then you are unable to participate in doubles ladder.
You cannot substitute your partner, unless you disband. This means if your partner gets banned from the site for a
month then your team cannot participate in ladder for that month.
Latency:
Latency, sometimes high latency, are inherent properties when playing Brawl online. Understand that
playing on wifi means accepting an inherent level of latency in matches. Since every person's
tolerance of what latency is acceptable is different, then there are only two ways to effectively
cancel a match because of lag.
- The 3 minute cancellation window. Within 3 minutes of accepting a challenge a match can be
canceled -- this means that if unplayable latency is discovered that a cancellation should be submitted
immediately. If the 3 minute window has already passed then a match cannot be unilaterally canceled.
- To cancel a match after the 3 minute window has expired both opponent must agree to the cancellation.
- Unilaterally canceling a match by submitting a cancellation request and exiting out of the chat room
will result in the forfeiture of that match.
- Unilaterally quitting out of a game in progress will result in the forfeiture of that game.
Ladder Playoffs:
- After the end of the regular season the top 32 players (singles ladder), the top 16 players (Project M and low tier ladder), and top 16 teams (doubles ladder) will qualify for the playoffs.
- The playoffs will use a seeded double elimination bracket.
- The rules for the playoffs are the same as the regular season.
- The Winner's Finals, Loser's Finals, and Grand Finals of playoffs will be best of 5.
In order to participate in the playoffs for a given season you must play at least 30 matches in singles ladder, Project M, or low tier ladder . In order to participate in the doubles playoff your team has to play at least 20 matches.
Brawl Low Tier Rule Set:
All matches
must be played using the following rule set:
- General:
- YOU MAY ONLY USE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERS IN THE LOW TIER LADDER:
Luigi, Pokémon Trainer, Lucas, Mario, Samus, Bowser, Captain Falcon, Link, Jigglypuff, Zelda, Ganondorf.
Using a character NOT in the low tier pool will result in an automatic match loss. It is your own responsibility to know the list of eligible characters and pick accordingly.
- Any action that can prevent the game from continuing (i.e., freezing, disappearing characters, game reset, etc.) will result in
a forfeit of that match for the player that initiated the action. You are responsible for knowing your own character, and must be wary
about accidentally triggering one of these effects.

Disputes and Dishonor:
- Any challenge that receives conflicting reports from players will automatically file a dispute.
Disputes are reviewed by our Referee staff.
- You may change your report on a disputed challenge by clicking the "reopen" icon next to the
challenge and re-reporting. You can change a mis-report this way and make things much easier
on our staff.
- Dishonor points are given to users involved in disputes in amounts depending on the dispute.
- When reviewing a dispute, Referees will ask players for any evidence in support of their position.
If irrefutable evidence can be given either way, the player providing it will receive a win for the match.
If a match cannot be decided either way, it will be canceled and both players will receive a Dishonor
point.
- If you receive more than three dishonor points, you will be disqualified from ladder.
Dishonor points are given based on the results of a dispute. There are some exceptions, but that will be on a case by case basis.
By the way, referees have been informed to be more "strict" on disputes, meaning more chances of dishonor points.
Please be careful when reporting.
Closing:
There's nothing we love more than an intense, high level match between two great players, but
please don't let that blind you from the true purpose of the game. We're here to have fun!
This ladder is here to make the game even more fun than it already is, so try and remember:
it's just a game! Have fun, and good luck to everyone!
