Winter '13 Bi-Weekly Ladder Update #1

Hello everyone, hope you've been having a good new year so far. As far as ladder goes, that hasn't changed much. Just as ladder has been dead, so has the productivity of the ladder articles. Despite this though, I put up an update for all of you, because I believe some of you still care about them. I have also decided to opt for something new, in which instead of me putting the names of the characters used, I put the little icon/image of them. Let me know if you guys like it this way, or if you prefer the names in text.

*NOTE* If your main is not listed on here correctly, please post on this thread so that the update will be more accurate.

I want to remind everyone that if you have any replays of your best ladder matches and you’d like to share it and have it featured on here for the ladder updates, feel free to send them to me or Trish via PMs.

- Ryo decides to do more than just beast offline. He's now entered ladder with his Ike. Be afraid.
- There are two notable low tiers who are in this ranking. Congratulations to both promise (Zelda) and Raptor (Yoshi) for putting in the good work, and keep it up!

Doubles:

- As you have noticed, only top 4 is listed here instead of top 16. This is because Doubles Ladder is so dead, that there isn't really anything to say. Come on people, step it up.

The unnatural howling of the wind comes to an abrupt halt, as the eerie creaking of the stairs slowly fade away - a reminder that Halloween has come to an end. With that, powers go out in the East Coast due to the remnants of Hurricane Sandy, and the presidential debate gets caught up in its own storm. But ladies and gentlemen, no one could possibly be prepared for the next dramatic event of November. And that is... The Ladder Update. I bring to you our fourth episode on this season's Fall 2012 Ladder. So without further ado, pull out your popcorn and coffee favorite beverage, as we witness how this saga will continue.

- Red Roy has played 251 matches so far, the most matches played in this ranking.

- Denti's score is 2012. He's had his new year's resolution all planned out.

Doubles:

- nostalgia ULTRA. and Dark Buttercup lead doubles ladder with 31 wins and no losses so far.

Hello everybody! Aside from my Halloween humor, I am back with another event. Halloween is approaching shortly, so we have been trying to make this year filled with activities. Aside from stocking up on hoards of candy, have you done anything fun?

- Halloween Costume Contest: First, there’s the Halloween Costume Contest, where you can dress up and show us your spooky and crazy costumes. More information about the Halloween Contest can be found here.

- Get-Together: Next, what would Halloween be without a little get-together? You can’t miss this year's Halloween party! At this event, we can all hang out and talk about spooky Halloween stories, play some Brawl, trade cards, and do whatever you feel like it as long as it remains within the site rules. So make sure you keep this weekend open, because it's going to take place on Sunday, November 4th.

- Smash Trivia: Along with socializing and brawling, Yoshinendo will also be there hosting his special trivia. These trivia question aren't as easy as you'd think, so you'd better be studying up on anything Smash related( and keep Google ready). Those who answer the questions correctly will get points, and at the end, will be awarded with badges and/or cards.

- Signature of the Week: It's been awhile since we had one of these, but Kawaii Desu Otter has returned to launch another Signature of the Week contest... this time, Halloween themed! Please participate here.

Fall '12 Bi-Weekly Ladder Update #3

Hey everyone! I’m here to bring you another Bi-Weekly Ladder Update for this season. Before we get into the rankings I would like to remind you that the ladder will close at 11:59 PM on November 30th, which gives you just over 5 weeks to play the ladder and get the placing you’ve always wanted! As of now, the ladder hasn’t been too active, so if you still want to get your games in, now is the time to start preparing for that. Be advised that there is a minimum number of matches required to both get the badges and to qualify for playoffs, unlike past seasons.

I’d also like to remind everyone that the Perfect Week for Doubles Ladder began yesterday. The details of this event are discussed here, but the reward will be a badge worth 750 points. There’s also a Doubles Weekend event scheduled for this coming weekend - this will also reward participants with a badge if they fulfill the requirements, so now is the time to get started with those. Don’t delay!

If you have any questions, please send a message to Mocha or Lightlanayru. If I haven’t listed your character(s) correctly, please post here to make sure that we get them correct next time. That being said, let’s get to the rankings (Note: these were taken at 6:10 PM CST on Oct. 22).

-Singles Ladder primarily features Meta Knight players, with at least 18 of the top 32 players using Meta Knight. At least there’s some variety otherwise, with Zelda, Lucas, Toon Link, Wolf and other characters making showings.
-nostalgia ULTRA. is far ahead of the crowd, over 200 points above the next in line, Dark Buttercup (though Kirsi [DracoBlaze] will probably resurface from his 'withdrawn' status soon).
-We have a new addition to the rankings since the last update: Udivine, with no losses and 25 wins.
-nostalgia ULTRA., Dark Buttercup, M to the Ekos, Saruhebi and Dilemma are usually known as FOW, MJG, Mekos, Stridez and Zodi, for those of you who were wondering what their true identities are.
-M to the Ekos is the highest ranked player in singles right now who is using a low tier - Lucas.
-nostalgia ULTRA. and Dark Buttercup take 1st in Doubles Ladder with 20 wins and no losses.
-Not much else to note about Doubles Ladder other than a reminder to pick up the activity.

New Event: The Perfect Week

Hello, AIB! It's been a while since I last made an announcement, but I can assure you I've been working on a LOT of new things along with the rest of the wonderful staff. As far as things that have been announced in the past, I promise they're coming. We've had Series 5 take off not too long ago and now we're going to have a collaboration event featuring several contests thrown together from AIB Ladder and TCG. I'm talking of course, about The Perfect Week! For those of you that missed out on the announcement, The Perfect Week is an event that takes place 7 days straight. The goal of the event is to beat 1 NEW/DIFFERENT opponent every day in the ladder, which is slightly modified from Barney's Perfect Week (if anybody here watches HIMYM). The same rules apply to Doubles Perfect Week. On top of all of this, it will be the same week as Singles Weekend and Doubles Weekend!

Singles:

The Perfect Week: Beat 1 DIFFERENT person, every day, for 7 days straight and you will be rewarded for The Perfect Week.

Singles Weekend Warrior: Play 2 matches, every day, during Oct 19-21. You do not have to win these matches.

Doubles:

The Perfect Week: Same rules above apply; beat 1 DIFFERENT team, every day, for 7 days straight and the badge is yours.

Doubles Weekend Warrior: Play 2 matches, every day, during Oct 26-28. You do not have to win these matches.

Doubles Night: Play 3 matches on Oct 26. You do not have to win these matches.

***Staff teams will be showing up from 7-9 EST.

We are very limited on staff members, so we have another special announcement! If you manage to beat a team of staff members (regardless if they are teamed in doubles ladder) you will receive the Double Danger badge. This is mainly because most staff members are on teams with a regular member and aren't able to hand out this badge specifically for this reason. LADDER RULES APPLY; this means you may only challenge once per day, 2/3, etc. We are keeping a list of the people that we will play, so we'll know if you try to switch teams to steal the badge away (when you could just practice overnight and try again ;P lol).

SVK Skyviper and Foodies will count as staff members for this event!

SPECIAL RULE REGARDING TIMEZONES:

You may play YOUR respective timezone and still qualify for the badge. This is mainly addressing England, Germany, Norway/Sweden, and other EU territories, but people in USA can still do it. AIB is hosted from the west coast, so we have to go by west coast time on pretty much everything (ladder updates, daily cards, etc). I want this to be a fair event, and I would like it if everybody is able to be a winner. There's a 5-12 hour difference depending on where you live, and what part of Europe you're referring to; pretty much, I don't want them up at 7am the next day trying to get the badge just because AIB is biased.

Next up, Foodies has an announcement on behalf of all you card folks out there!

Singles Perfect Week - series 5 cards: 3C, 2UC, 1R
Singles Weekend - 6 cards from all series (chance of what you get depends on rarities).

We have Halloween coming up at the end of the month, and we can expect AiB to create some fun activities for everyone. Despite ladder being dead, SVK Skyviper & Foodies will be providing us with a special surprise following up after this update which will hopefully help bolster ladder activity and site activity in general.

- Strato Quake Angel Admiral Pit and ToxinTANK fire up their arrows and put our Uprising angel to war.

Fall Ladder '12 Bi-Weekly Update #1

Hello AiB, hope everyone has been doing well. Seems like things have been both a progress and a hindrance as far as ladder goes. While we're taking up on the Double Meta Knight ban rule, we're also significantly increasing in activity. This has been happening even before the rule was imposed, however. I have never seen so little activity before. I mean, we don't even have a 16th place in doubles ladder right now. I understand we just started the season, but I think it would be great if we could pick up the activity guys.

- Sheik is definitely an uncommon character on wifi, but dcold brings out the ninja to do some work
- Bananas everywhere! Quite a bit of Diddy this season.
- At least 17 Meta Knights are currently at the top of singles ladder.

Hello AiB, hope everyone has been doing well. It was tricky getting these rankings in at first due to the site crashing on Sunday, but now it's back and I've gotten everything done. This article opens up the last month of the ladder for this season.

Singles:

- EMINEM and Salem with a win streak and no losses so far. How long will they be able to keep their streak?
- _Quest_ with 384 matches played so far!
- ×MÁR× is the only Diddy Kong, Raffi-X is the only R.O.B., ven the only Zelda, and Fluttershy the only Pikachu at the moment active in top 32 singles.
- Quite a bit of Wario and Snake this season.
- At least 11 Meta Knights are currently at the top of singles ladder.

Doubles:

- EMINEM and WaDiRob lead doubles ladder with their Meta Knight / Wario team and only one loss so far
- Those two aren't the only teams using Wario - Wafty and LOE1 are wafting in with their double Wario team. Hold your noses!
- Props to GenoSamus for being the only Samus in doubles ladder right now. Low tiers in dubs aren't easy to come by.
- Red Roy and Music Box with a unique Ike / Zero Suit team.
- At least 12 Meta Knights are currently at the top of doubles ladder, and at least 3 are confirmed double Meta Knight teams.

Hello, AiB! It's been awhile since I've written a ladder article for the site, but I've recently received a request to write another article - so it looks like I'll be alternating with lightlanayru, Invinciboy, and Minty Horse. I've taken the time to make sure the scores/rankings/characters are as accurate as possible. If I missed any character someone used, please let me know. It also helps to have pointers on signatures, ladder feedback, and profile as to the character that was used in ladder.

Hello there again, All is Brawl! Now that the trick-or-treating is over, a new holiday with even more food is upon us. In addition, schools are getting closer to letting kids out for winter vacation (but not before final exams!) Isn't Fall lovely? But enough of all that; there's a contest at hand! Let's get to it!

Last edition's results: ken2 was the mystery user of #33. He joined the site on July 23, 2010, mains Diddy Kong in Mario Kart Wii, and his favorite board game of all time is Taboo. ShadowHero, Foodies, Cpt.OrangeFox, SkOaRaAn, and Mocha were the first five to guess correctly, so congrats to them! "So it was November 28th, 2003. I was in Ohio. It was Winter and we got news about a chance of having a snowstorm outside. I doubted it. My brother was playing outside in the snow as my grandma was watching him. I was chilling. Later on, I was looking for my brother and went to my grandma to ask where did he go. She said, "I thought he came in." I said, "Seriously? He could be freezing as heck out there!" So I came outside. It was freezing as hell outside and I could barely see due to the strong snow. After an hour. I cried and fell on my knees to the ground. Then I got up and sniffed as I walked home. Suddenly, I fell in the snow on something, looked down and it was my brother! Very relieved, I picked him up and ran in the house to get a blanket for him. He seemed to be fine and was going to be okay. Though, he had a cold. A cold is bad, but it's a good thing he is safe."

Psychology of Gamers

Introduction

Hey AiB, it's been awhile since I've written anything for you guys, the last article being a ladder update. Hopefully I'll be able to write more of those for you in the future, however, with this article, I'm hoping to take a step further and have a bit more variety in my writing. That, and applying my interests in Psychology, gaming, and writing all into one.
I’m working on getting a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and I'm currently taking a couple of Psychology classes at my university. One of them is Social Psychology, which is basically about how mental processes and behavior are influenced by other people. What does this have to do with Brawl?

Everything!

Whether you realize it or not, Brawlers are constantly being influenced by others. People can influence them to play a certain character, to not play a certain character, to abuse a move, to use it less because they are getting punished for it, to intentionally annoy each other so that they play worse, to encourage - I mean, this could go on and on. I don't think some of us realize just how much another individual can change how we play.

There are several factors that play a huge role in how people influence us or in how we play.

Personality

Lifestory: For example, when Brawl first came out, I used my usual favorite two mains that I had used in Melee. But I wanted to toy around with the other characters, especially the newer ones. I picked up Meta Knight at the time, and actually enjoyed using him because I liked the idea of an amazing aerial character - not even knowing back then that his ground game was nothing to scoff at either. Meta Knight was my 'pocket character' or my 'third main', however, it didn't take long before people started to complain to me about how broken he was, and not just to me, but to everyone in general. I was conflicted; did I really want to keep using this character who had supposedly caused so much harm? Or should I pick up another pocket character and keep using my mains?

I had in fact, become so discouraged about Meta Knight, that I grew to dislike him to the point where I felt 'cheap' when I used him. I wasn't even taking into account that there would be other people who had no problem using Meta Knight, and that they would play cheap too. My mentality was strict and stubborn, "Well just because they play cheap, it doesn't mean I have to." I've found that I wasn't the only player with this train of thought. Some of these people ended up using characters that were hindered by the onslaught of higher tiers/MK, others used high tiers themselves and went far in the tournament scene, yet continued to struggle with MK. Whatever the case was, the very subject of Meta Knight would have me look away and shake my head. I didn't stop using him because I felt like it. It was clear that in this situation, other people had influenced me to make that decision.

Again, this goes back to personality. You can put someone else in my shoes, and they wouldn't have given a rat's rear about people complaining about Meta Knight. In fact, others would become even more encouraged to use him - may that be to irritate others, may that be to win, or maybe they just have fun with the character.

People with the 'pleasing personality', or the knack for wanting to please others without much consideration into what you want - can be taken advantage of by other players so that they don't play to their full potential. If someone complains about how retarded your upsmash is, then the pleasing person will limit the usage because they don't want to be a bother for that person. If someone complains that all you do is grab, then you find yourself grabbing considerably less, and then you wonder why you've started playing worse all the sudden.

If you don't care about pleasing others, you'll keep playing how you've been doing, because it's working for you. Or you'll abuse the move(s) that have been bothering your opponent, and find yourself 2 or 3-stocking them, because you're exploiting their frustration. This of course, doesn't apply to everyone, and not every opponent is going to be raging between matches. But these are just some examples to show how personalities alone can be influenced by others, and how they affect your gameplay. There are also players with good sportsmanship, who won't try to put the other down, and have either little or no complaining. When both players display this, then both can usually play well against each other as far as psychologically well is concerned. This does not mean that a Ganon player is going to be consistently beating Sheik simply because he's mentally focused and not being bothered during the game.

Emotions

You’ve probably heard of stories where people ‘throw their controller’ or break their plasma television after losing to their opponent. Perhaps they even got physically violent with their opponent. These people tend to do poor in a tournament environment, and possibly get disqualified, depending on the degree of aggression. These players also have a knack for being ‘bad’ players, not because they lack skill per say, but because they’re usually too stubborn to try and work on overcoming their frustration and learn from their mistakes. These players can be of any age, however can be common among children and teenagers who are first adjusting to competitive play. This immature attitude either matures itself with time, and the player learns that they need to be more self-controlled. Or this attitude continues, and the player eventually gives up on the game and moves onto something else. One can argue that video games can help contribute to someone’s normally aggressive behavior and actually help mature the player not just as a gamer, but a person.

Another emotion that can be a result of doing badly against an opponent is depression, and a constant attack on their own self esteem. In some ways, this can be more dangerous than being very angry. These individuals sometimes have more in their life going on than just getting sad over a game – they have problems in the home environment, with parents, siblings, students at school, or all of these. They are generally extroverts online (friendly and active), and introverts otherwise. Gaming can be considered an ‘escape’ for them from the constant gloomy environment they’re succumbed in. These gamers sometimes have a low self-esteem, and are the ones that are very hard on themselves about almost anything, especially the games they play, because they put so much dedication into them. These are the ones that say ‘I suck.’ or ‘I don’t know why you would bother with playing someone as bad as me.’ They are sometimes criticized for taking the game ‘too seriously’ or for being ‘too emo.’ I believe these players can overcome this misery with encouragement from others, and a growing self-need to feel more confident with themselves in general. Mocking and bringing these gamers down is a poor way to help. Pointing out to them that a game shouldn’t be taken so seriously isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it’s more like how you do this. Be clear and honest, but be kinder with your words. No, this doesn’t mean you should overdo it and become the sponge to soak in all their problems constantly, but being a bit more delicate and understanding won’t kill you.

Finally, there are people who don’t really get enraged or depressed, and are either pretty neutral between matches, or they’ll laugh off their losses and move on. These gamers tend to be friendly and have a good sense of humor. They may not have the perfect social life, but they don’t usually threaten to kill anyone, or themselves – for losing in a game. This isn’t implying that all gamers with this pleasant attitude are saints. However, these gamers have the potential to become excellent examples and role models for other gamers who struggle with their emotions. These gamers can become decent tournament hosts, moderators, and other leadership positions.

Habits

Lifestory: When I went to Hobo 33, a local tournament here in Texas, I observed the gamers there and studied how they played; what helped them focus, what distracted them, etc. Out of all the players there, one guy stood out to me among them. He was the only player there who had his headphones on, listening to music, while playing. For some people, this would be incredibly distracting from the game. I was curious about this, so after I played a match with him, I asked him how he was able to focus on the game. He lowered his head phones around his neck, and said, “Oh no, this is exactly how I’m able to focus.”

Habits can seem unusual to some people, and perfectly normal to others. Habits have the potential to affect game play in such a way that an entire match can make a difference to the individual. I have come across many different habits people have, as well as my own when it comes to playing Brawl. I specifically pointed out Brawl, because I have my own set of particular habits for this game, compared to other games.

The size of a television for example, can affect game play to some players. People who are used to playing on a larger screen, and with amazing graphics, will find themselves squinting and shaking their head at a television twice or more smaller than what they’re used to during a tournament. Likewise, a player who’s used to playing on a smaller screen will find larger televisions too ‘big’, and will be overwhelmed by how much space there is on the screen, even though the space doesn’t literally change the size of the stages themselves. Others, like me, are used to many television sizes, and aren’t affected much by the changes, while others are able to adapt fairly quickly, whether they’re used to or not – the television size making no difference in how they play.

Sounds for me make a huge deal in how I play. Similarly to the example I provided in this section, the guy at the tournament was able to focus only with his headphones on. Other players can’t concentrate like this at all. Although I like to have music when I play, I would rather the music be part of the game itself, or a custom music on the game (though it can be argued that some custom songs are distracting) rather than having my headphones on, blocking out all other sounds. I find myself very ‘attached’ to the sounds of the game, as in the actual sounds; jumping, powershielding, moves, etc. For some strange reason, if I don’t hear those sounds while I’m playing, I seem to play more uncomfortable. Even things like listening to the buttons of my controller being tapped and having rumble on my controller whenever I use a smash have an effect in how I play. I’ve grown so used to these things, that playing otherwise would throw me off.

Character and stage textures, or some kind of hack in the game can also contribute to how someone plays. For some people, character and stage hacks hardly make any difference. For others, they find it distracting, and are either more comfortable with their own hacks, or no hacks. Then of course, those that have gotten too used to their hacks, may have a difficult time with the default game’s textures. In addition to textures however, even a default game’s color can cause some interesting results on the player. You sometimes hear of people say, ‘Oh, I lost because I didn’t use my red Falcon.’ (which to many people, are considered johns) or stuff like, ‘I HAVE to be blue Pikachu to do well with him.’ While some people would laugh at these silly statements, for some players, having their desired color is almost like another character for them.

Conclusion

I bet a couple of the factors that I pointed out are merely glimpses of just how things can affect game play. I feel like these are, however, the more obvious ones when you glance at it from a general and psychological perspective. Keep in mind that none of this, especially in the ‘Emotions’ section, are things set in stone, and that everyone who has a particular lifestyle and personality are always like this. I realize that everyone is different, and that someone within a harsh environment, for example, can actually be extremely cheerful people. I’m just looking at this from a typical standpoint, based on my experiences, both of my own and other people’s experiences, and applying this with what I’ve learned and with what I’m still learning in Psychology. I hope you have all learned something from this, or at least, I hope this has made you think about interesting things you don’t normally think about. Or even ask yourself a couple of questions. What helps you play well? What distracts you? How do you make a comeback?

I also hope that I can someday make some kind of guide, or a helpful essay giving some suggestions to people in how they can improve as gamers, which, as I stated before, can even go as far as to improve themselves as a person.

Hello everyone! After an extended period of having to use my 3DS to access the Internet, I am finally back on a main PC. Thanks a lot for covering for me, Trish! You can take a rest for this one, as I want to make up for lost ground. Let's get started, shall we?

On a side-note, don't believe what Trish said about me in the last ladder update; while I do have an intense hatred for that putrid pink piece of...*ahem* waste, that won't stop me for accepting your replays if they have Kirby in them.
