After spending countless hours researching if this would even be possible, I'm proud to announce today that we have launched our very first Mario Kart 8 Ladder! It wasn't easy trying to come up with a ruleset for a Mario Kart Ladder, but I've managed to put something together that I think will work out great. I would also like to give a big thank you to all of you who got an early preview of the rules, and gave valuable input on whether or not you felt something would work. Now, I'd like to give everyone a chance to look over the rules we'll be operating under, and give everyone a chance to voice their opinion on the ruleset. I will be carefully reviewing everything said regarding the ruleset, and will update the rules with any major discrepancies as needed. Please keep in mind that this ladder is considered a trial ladder. These rules are subject to change before being implemented in a normal ladder season. On that note, since this is a trial ladder, there will be no playoffs following the close of the ladder. There will however, still be prizes available to be won. Prizes will be announced in a future article, so keep your eye out for that!

Now, as I'm sure you all realize, we're mainly a Smash Bros website. As a result, I'm here to tell you that we have also launched another Smash Ladder alongside the Mario Kart one! This ladder will be run using similar rules to previous ladders. For those of you that still haven't had a chance to check out the alternative Smash server, directions on how to connect to it can be found here: http://allisbrawl.com/blogpost.aspx?id=155313

Aside from the individual ladder rules, the general rules for both ladders are the same. While the majority of the general rules are the same as before, there is one new feature that everyone that participates in either ladder needs to be aware of: the three minute cancellation rule is no more. There were too many cases these past ladders of this 3 minute window being abused, so it has been removed from the ladder altogether. This means that at all times both players must submit a cancellation request in order for a match to be successfully cancelled.

Just like the MK8 Ladder, the new Brawl ladder will not be having a playoffs at its conclusion. It will however, also have prizes associated with it. The prizes for the Brawl ladder will also be announced at a later date. Prizes may also change depending on the number of people which participate in the ladder.

It's been a while since we've had a ladder season up, so I'm very excited to be getting the ball rolling here again. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about anything, please make sure to mention them below.

The Winter '14 Playoffs came to an end earlier this week, thus marking the end of the final Brawl playoffs of AiB. Aside from a seeding error at the start of playoffs, things went on almost flawlessly this time around. For those of you that placed high enough for monetary prizes, your names have already been forwarded to JV. Keep a look out for a PM from him in regards to how you'll be receiving your money. Aside from the monetary rewards, there's also the matter of site prizes. If you'll be receiving any sort of site prize, I'll be getting in contact with you in the near future. But what good are prizes if you don't know who won them? Why don't I go ahead and fix that. Without further ado, I present the winners of the Winter '14 Playoffs.

Aside from announcing the playoffs winners, I want to take this time to briefly talk about the future of the ladder, seeing as how the Brawl servers will be going offline in 19 days. Smash 4 for 3DS is slated to come out sometime during the summer, sometime in August most likely. Between then and now however, we do plan on having other events running. We still don't have the specifics of what we'll be doing, but we'll let you know once we do. A possibility is that we bring back the Smash 64 Ladder that we ran in the past. We could also always make an event out of an entirely different game. As I mentioned, we're still in the process of talking things over, but I figured I should inform you that something WILL be happening between Smash games.

Once everything is hammered out, I'll make an announcement to inform all of you. Until that time, I hope you all enjoy the final days of online Brawl.

Another ladder season has come and gone and it's once again time for the ladder playoffs! As of earlier today, everyone should have already received their badges for placing high on the ladder. If you still haven't received your badge, that probably means one of two things: either I typo'ed your name when I was handing them out, or you were found guilty of breaking a ladder rule, thus getting disqualified from both the ladder season, and playoffs eligibility. If you were disqualified, you'll probably be receiving a notice in the near future. But enough about badges, let's move onto the actual playoffs.

As per usual, in order to qualify for the playoffs, you had to have had placed in the top 32 of the Singles Ladder, or top 16 of the other three. Assuming you placed in either of these regions, you should find your name somewhere in the brackets below. Let me know right away if I forgot to add you to the bracket!

Everyone will have no more than 48 hours to complete their matches (that means no extensions). If you cannot reach your opponent, you must PM me within the time period saying that your opponent is not responding. Failure to play your matches on time will result in a loss. If you fail to notify me that your opponent is not responding, both players (or teams) will be given a loss. All other rules are the same as the normal ladder period.

Links to the brackets will be available on the front page starting tonight. I will be updating the brackets daily, so make sure to check there first if you are unsure who your opponent is. Because these links will be updated daily, saying you didn't know who your opponent was is not a valid excuse. As soon as you know who your opponent is, you are free to play them, even if I haven't updated the bracket yet (aka don't wait for me).

Notes:

- Cody has a dominant lead that hasn't changed in the past weeks, looks like he'll be our last ladder champion

- Derive finally fell out of 2nd place, but was quickly replaced by another Equinox member in Prey

- Penta lagged his way into top 5, typical gnw main

- Meek makes it to top 8 undefeated, making him one of the players to beat atm along with Waymas and Patg

- Toxxy played his first ladder match since January and unfortunately lost his undefeated streak, unfortunate


That's all I have for today, be sure to play your hearts out for the remainder of the season, there's so little time left and so many games to play.  Try breathing life into the other 3 ladders, you won't have a chance to play them again either, and the name colors are so pretty.
A day late due to some, site difficulties, but an update is here nonetheless.  It feels weird knowing that after this ladder, these articles won't be made for brawl and pm anymore.  Even though we will miss it, we still have the future to look forward too, and, I'm going to shut up now and just post the update because no one reads this part (or the article in general, hue).

That's it for now, but to somewhat help promote activity in the ladders outside of brawl singles, I'm going to throw this out there. if I don't see any real activity, I'm not going to put them in the next update, because all three of those ladders were literally the same exact order minus switching two people, and there's really no point in posting updates that don't exist.  So if you care about them, go hype them up and get some activity going, I want to see this final ladder go out with a bang!

- Zelda is the only duplicate character in top 8
- No one is undefeated in project m top 8 and it's the only ladder to have that

- 5 of the top 8 are also undefeated, with Ant having the highest streak currently
- 8 of the top 8 are using low tiers

That's it for now, just a standard old update.  While it seems that brawl singles is getting a lot of mixups in the placings, it would be nice to see that kind of activity spread around, especially in doubles, but everyone is too scared to play each other and it makes for very few games actually happening :(  Can't stop people from thinking that way and in most cases they don't want to fight a battle they know they will lose, so it happens.  Look forward to the next update, give me some delicious updates to hype things up
It's time for the very first ladder update of the year allisbrawlers, it's very exciting I know.  We decided to wait until after apex before doing the first one, but rest assured it will return to bi-weekly right after this.  Activity in the singles ladder has been pretty normal so far, but unfortunately it seems the other ladders aren't going as active.  You should also know that ladder decay is back in effect, meaning you can't slack off if you want to keep your current ranks.  It's also important to keep decay in mind if you have your eyes set on winning the new ladder prizes (just remember they aren't ACTUAL trophies).  With that out of the way, lets get to our current standings

The season still has a long way to go, meaning you have plenty of time to catch up if you want to make playoffs this season, but if you haven't started at all, you're going to have a tough time going for first place if you want those trophy prizes (again, not actual trophies).  Make sure to play as much as you can, and hopefully we can find a way to promote activity in ladders besides singles, especially doubles.
It’s a little hard to believe that it’s been an entire year since we last had a complete ladder season along with playoffs. With the site now having a DDoS protection service, things are finally looking good for us. That being said, I thought it would be a good idea to refresh everyone’s memory on how playoffs will be operating in a couple months, since it looks like we’ll finally be able to host the traditional event.

If you recall, back during the Spring ’13 playoffs we introduced a new system full of new prizes to be won by participants. Unfortunately that plan was never able to fully come to fruition due to the DDoS attacks. I say “fully” because part of that plan included the new name colors associated with the placing badges, but those were handed out when the site stabilized a bit. Now that the site is fully stable, I’d like to re-introduce the playoffs plan we’ll be operating under from now on.

The following prizes apply only to Singles Playoffs:
1st Place: $100 payout, a spot on the Ladder Champions Beach Ball, trophy
2nd Place: $50 payout, trophy
3rd Place: Trophy

The following prizes apply to all other playoffs (Doubles, Project M, Low Tier):
1st Place: $50 payout (per player for Doubles), a spot on the Ladder Champions Beach Ball, (team) trophy
2nd Place: $25 payout (per player for Doubles), (team) trophy
3rd Place: (Team) trophy

You probably noticed that everyone that places in the top 3 gets a special prize called a trophy. The trophies will essentially be custom trading cards that you can display on your profile to show off your achievement. Trophies aren’t just limited to the top playoffs placers either. In fact, everyone that plays on the ladder is eligible for a trophy. These other trophies will require a certain group to award them to you however, based on whatever category you decide to participate in (or possibly get entered into).

The following are the categories (and judging groups) of the trophies which everyone are eligible to win:
Sickest Combo (user submitted video, community judged)
Best Comeback (user submitted video, community judged)
Highest placing low tier* (placing determined, staff awarded)
Best W/L Ratio** (placing determined, staff awarded)
Sportsman of the season (community judged)
Most Matches Played (placing determined, staff awarded)
Most Improved (placing determined, staff awarded)
Biggest Upset (user recommended, staff finalist determined, community judged)

If these trophy categories end up being a success, we may add or modify categories for future ladders. If the overall idea flops, we’ll replace it with something else. If you want to submit a video to be judged for a trophy prize, please upload the video to Youtube and send me the link via a PM. (Raw replay data WILL NOT be accepted!) I will then compile all of the videos sent in and present them all at once for the community to judge. This will take place sometime during playoffs most likely. The deadline to submit videos for judgment will be set at 11:59 PM on March 31st.

In addition to the above prizes, everyone that makes at least top 64 in Singles and top 32 on the secondary ladders will get a badge. Each badge will give a name color corresponding to the color of the badge itself (so if the badge is green, you’ll get a green name color). Note: while top 64 and top 32 get badges, only top 32 for Singles and top 16 for the others qualify for playoffs.

Hopefully the opportunity to win some new and exciting prizes will get everyone hyped for the upcoming playoffs season. I’m looking forward to hosting another round of playoffs in April.

With the end of Brawl 'til Fall 2013 ladder season, I thought it would be the perfect time to interview someone who placed well in it.  I picked out Cody, a New Englander formerly known as Quest, who placed second in the ladder with an impressive record of 22-0.

Hamek: First and foremost, I'd like to congratulate you on getting second on the fall 2013 ladder, that's quite an accomplishment, especially since you were undefeated.

Cody: Well… thanks, but it was only a joke ladder lol.

Hamek: Even so, not losing at all in 22 matches is nothing to sneeze at.  According to the brawl widget on your profile you main Zero Suit Samus, but in some of the feedback I noticed that your opponent mentioned you played Sonic.  Who did you use during this ladder season?

Cody: I used mostly three characters. ZSS, MK, and Sonic.         

Hamek: Is that because you wanted to see how your Meta Knight and Sonic complimented your ZSS in certain match-ups or because you just wanted to have some fun playing different characters?

Cody: Mostly to have fun. I just used Sonic to see how he would do and as for Meta Knight, it was a joke ladder. But I wanted to practice tech skill and input consistency for using him more offline.          

Hamek: Speaking of that, you live in New England, a region which to my knowledge has had a good amount of drama, were you yourself involved in any drama?

Cody: Sure I trash talk a lot of the other players hoping to motivate them to improve. I want them to be able to compete against any other regions we might have to face at a national but when I trash talk it's all in good fun. They know I joke around (or at least I think they do).

Hamek: Trash talking people is a great way to make them focus on getting better to try to beat you, I agree.

Cody: The "drama" we have is just an occasional argument on aib. We don't even do it as much anymore. Everyone is nice in person at the tourneys I attend.          

Hamek: Yeah, I saw arguments on allisbrawl and wasn't sure if that extended to offline or not.  It's nice to see that it doesn't. Who do you think is the best player you've beaten?

Cody: Well, I haven't beaten anyone *super pro* yet, but I do have a winning record on Joe ST in tourney, and he's pretty good. Also Sails, the best Diddy Kong in New England, who beat Bloodcross.

Hamek: A similar question but changing the focus a bit, is there anyone who you think is underrated in the smash scene?

Cody: There might be a few.

Hamek: Do you have anyone in mind?

Cody: Maybe Falln the kirby main? I think he's pretty amazing or… on the east coast, maybe Koolaid. Koolaid doesn't go out of region as often as Bloodcross and Mike Ray do, but he is still very consistent. All the "good players" I can think of are already pretty famous. Oh, maybe some Japanese players are underrated.

Hamek: I looked up falln and he has some impressive wins, one against Mikehaze and one against Tyrant too. Is there anyone specific who you practice a lot with or is do you ladder mostly by going to tournaments and playing ladder?

Cody: I live in New Hampshire, in a very rural area. The only other New Hampshire brawlers I know of are Artemis the Pikachu main, aqua421 the Kirby/Pikachu main, and etecoon the MK/Snake main. etecoon's aib account is Nick C. They all live at least an hour from me, so unfortunately most of my practice at home is from wifi. Luckily, there are tourneys that happen every month or so in New England.

Hamek:
Is there anyone specific on wifi you you play with a lot?

Cody:
Probably etecoon (Nick C.) when I see him in free play we usually play for a while. I also practice with Yoss, Ryuga, and Foodies sometimes.

Hamek:
You've got quite the variety of mains accounted there, MK, Snake, Falco, and Marth.

Cody: Yeah this is why I believe wifi is very good practice.

Hamek:
Yeah, it means that you're able to easily find people who main any character, you're not bound by who you live near.

Cody: The only high-level players I can face offline use Snake, MK, and Falco. On aib I can practice against many other match ups as well.

Hamek: That should definitely help you, especially in national tournaments where there are high level players who main just about any character. You joined allisbrawl right at the beginning of 2010, were you playing Brawl before that on another site or did you start playing when you joined allisbrawl?

Cody: I started competitive brawl on another site but only a month before joining aib (December 09). when I joined aib and swf it's where I really started getting into tourneys and watching the pros.

Hamek: Do you think you were at a disadvantage due to coming into the scene a bit late, or did you take advantage of it due to having a clean slate as the metagame was really starting to develop and change?

Cody: No, I don't think coming into the scene late was a problem. there are people who started much later than I did and are doing very well now.

Hamek: Okay, one final question. The end of the ladder coincided with allisbrawl being down for a while due to a Denial of Service attack. Are you disappointed that ladder playoffs were canceled and you could not see how far you could take your winning streak?

Cody: I'm not really disappointed. I had to play CT Zero round 1 and that was of course difficult because of the distance. Similarly, last playoffs I had to play Z, who is also distant from me (so it was pretty laggy). I prefer the ladder because you get to choose your opponents, and I usually pick the ones with whom I have a good connection. If I'm allowed to make a closing comment about the last ladder season .

Hamek: Yeah, I was going to ask what your thoughts were next, so go ahead.

Cody:
Then I'd say it was fun. I played over 100 matches, and it was my first time using ZSS and MK in a serious ladder. I definitely benefited from it. The joke ladder was fun as well, and I did treat most of my matches seriously. I'm appreciative of the aib staff who worked hard to make the ladder run as it did (both the spring season and the joke ladder.)

Hamek: Yeah, it's a bit hard for the staff to make it run smoothly with neal having a limited presence. Once again I'd like to thank you for your time.

So there you have it, someone who came into the brawl scene a bit later than most but still found a way to hone his skills and become a great player.

Is everyone excited for the next ladder season? Despite the chance that the whole site will be taken completely offline by the DDoS attacker and such, you know. I'm going to proceed as if that won't happen because I already planned these out: we will be having new prizes - Trophy cards! If this still doesn’t motivate you or if the site remains completely unfunctional, oh well. I tried.

Trophy cards will have the player’s name and accomplishment on them, as well as a picture of the character they used. They will not be exclusive cards (meaning only one person has them). Here are two possibilities of what the template will look like:

- Tiers will be based on the most recent tier list, with the exception of lower mid tier (which will be counted as low tier because of current AiB low tier ladder rules).
- The “highest placing” awards will be SINGLES LADDER only.
- The player must use characters in that tier in a majority (and by that I mean nearly all) of their matches. If you are going for mid-tier and you use a low tier randomly once it's fine, but any usage of a character above the corresponding tier will disqualify the player from the category.
- It would be helpful for staff if all ladder players reported what characters their opponent used in their feedback.
- Character usage is a trust system. If this somehow becomes a problem we will scrap the tier trophies (please don’t make us do this).
*Wins against the same player will not be counted for highest win streak. Ex: if you win against user 1, user 2, user 1, and then user 3 your streak would be counted as 3 instead of 4. However, if you lose that streak you may start the counting over.

- The matches have to come from the season’s ladder!
- Submit your replays to Foodies: Your message should include the category you are submitting for, the players in the match, what ladder it is from, and a link to the video.
- All submissions will be filtered by a private judging panel (to ensure a certain level of quality) but the final outcome will be based on user vote.
- If there isn’t enough participation or if the replays submitted are not impressive, that particular category will not be awarded for the season.
- Worst SD = for entertainment purposes generally.

- The candidates and winners for these subjective categories will be based on a combination of user vote and filtering by a private judging panel. There will be an article written when the time comes around.
- Versatile can mean many things: the person plays a lot of characters, is comfortable on multiple stages, doesn't always start by ageeing to SV, has bipolar disorder, whatever. This category is probably the one people can be creative with nominations for.
- ”The person to beat” could be seen as a substitution for a 1st place trophy, but it is not necessarily.
- "OMG Lag": Does this person lag a lot? Is this person good in lag/only wins because of lag? Maybe this person is good offline but terrible online? Or do they hate lag with the burning passion of a thousand suns? I'm also going to leave this one up to user interpretation.

General:
- In the event of ties in voting, the card will be shared.
- All categories can be won in all ladders (I'm assuming we will still have low tier and Project M ladders since no one has said otherwise) except the highest placing low tier (regular singles ladder), highest placing mid tier (regular singles ladder), and best team combo (doubles ladder).
- Every player who gets a trophy will automatically get their card. These cards will also be distributed from ladder wins (at a lower rate than duos mind you) and there might also be a forge recipe for them (depending on how I feel).
-This is a completely new project and everything is subject to change depending on circumstances. (That doesn't sound encouraging, but I may need to modify things depending on what happens)

It's hard to believe another season has come and gone. I feel like it was just a few weeks ago that I was putting together the Winter Playoffs. Speaking of which, there are still some unresolved things from those Winter Playoffs, huh? Badges and other prizes still haven't been given out. Well I'm here today to provide you guys with some info on what's going to happen with that, as well as provide some info on this season's playoffs.

Let's start with the unresolved issues from the Winter Playoffs. Cash prizes which are due to the top two singles placings (Nairo and CT ZeRo), and top two doubles teams (Sanoscy & Patg and Legit & The ViRu5), can only come from JV, so I will do my best to get a hold of him ASAP. Hopefully you'll hear from either him or myself about that soon.

As for badges, I will get those created and handed out hopefully by tonight. If for some reason that doesn't happen, you'll have them tomorrow at the latest. Also, if you guys recall, we changed up how badges are earned in playoffs. After listening to the dissatisfied opinions of many of you, I've decided to revert badge earning back to how it was before. So, badges for the Winter season, this season, and future seasons will all be based on your final ladder placing at the close of the season, and NOT how well you placed during playoffs itself.

On a final note for badges, the Winter Ladder badges are the final ones in which the classic blue/silver name colors can be earned. This season's badges will sport all new name colors. There are now six new name colors available to be earned via your ladder placing. I'll post more information on that in a future article containing information mainly for this season's playoffs. Lastly on this topic, the classic colors may be gone, but you might have another chance at one of them in the future.

With badges and cash prizes covered for the Winter Playoffs, let's go ahead and move onto this season's playoffs. The Spring '13 Ladder is set to end tonight! I will be taking screenshots of the ladder placings at 12:00 AM PST. The scores and placings reflected in those screenshots will be used to determine playoffs eligibility, and any matches occurring after the screenshot is taken will be invalidated, even if they had been opened prior to the deadline. There are still a few hours remaining for this season, so nothing is set in stone yet!

I'm hoping to kick off this season's playoffs early next week. I still have a few things to get ready before that, but it'll work out fine. I'll release another article next week to kick off playoffs. The article will include the Round One Brackets, additional information regarding some of the newer prizes, and information regarding the two trial ladders we implemented this season.

Time flies doesn't it? It’s time for another bi-weekly ladder update! As the month goes on, activity seems to have died down in all the ladders. Is it because people are tired of the game? Lack of ladder decay? That the hype players have left? Or maybe the lack of ladder rank badges having a significant impact? Probably all of these factors and more combined.

The good news is, E.nigma now has database powers, which means he can do things like reset the ladder! (Theoretically. I haven't actually confirmed this) Let's hope that he can make some positive changes to the site.

This is also a reminder to everyone that we’re awarding trophies (personalized cards) at the end of the season for “Sickest Combo” or “Best Comeback”, so remember to save any matches that you think would qualify! I haven't heard anything new about this aside from the initial announcement, but I'm hoping someone on staff will step up and organize this when the season is over (it might end up just being me, heh).

Singles:      
- ANTi retains his spot without playing a single match since the last update.

About 3 weeks remain before this season’s ladder ends on July 31st. With how activity has been lately, it would be great if people can step it up and play some more matches. It might even be possible to land a spot in the rankings in the new ladder seeing how decay is destroying everyone's scores (finding people might be the actual challenge, haha)! Even if you don’t think you can make it, laddering is always good practice and a way to improve your skills. Good luck to everyone and congrats to everyone that made it in this update!

I hope all is well and I hope everyone is continuing to enjoy the recent changes to our laddering system as well as this current laddering season. Horsy is here to bring you the third ladder rankings report for the Spring 2013 Laddering Season. I haven't done one of these in such a long time so it finally feels great to be doing so once again.

Now before we get into the current rankings and scores, I would just like to remind everyone that we take character mains of players from their most recent ladder feedback or from their profiles. Just as Foodies mentioned in the last bi-weekly ladder rankings report; if your character main isn't listed correctly on this or on any future rankings report, please use this thread here so that we can make corrections as needed.

Also another reminder to everyone that with these recent changes to our laddering system, we will be awarding trophies at the end of the laddering season for awesome video replays of your matches. Award trophy titles such as "Sickest Combo" and "Best Comeback" are just two of the many awesome trophy titles you can earn for your video replays. Singles:      
- ANTi climbs up into the top spot! Will he be able to retain his spot until the next update?
-Though they aren’t on this update (other than Otori), it looks like a few of Japanese players have taken an interest in participating in this ladder season. Cool.
- MJGeesus and Megafox (still) have no losses.
-Forget what the previous update said about not as many Meta Knights: he now takes up 50% of the spots.

Doubles:      
-There’s really not much that has changed since the last update, though some teams have switched spots adjacently.
-Doubles Day activity seems to be dying off. It seems that a new color wasn’t a good enough incentive.
-Maybe Doubles Perfect week will spark some more activity?

Project M Singles:      
-Silly Kyle keeps his top spot with an extra 2 wins added on.
-SmashG0D and Babatunde are new for this update, using Luigi and Peach respectively.
-Decay has caused a few changes in ranks. Hrm.
-There’s a good variety of characters being used. That’s always nice to see.

Low Tier Singles:      
-Tairbear retains his top position on this ladder with no additional matches played.
-Tsoky and Z are new for this update, using Mario and Samus respectively.
-Tsoky has no losses!

About two months remain before this season’s ladder ends on July 31st. That’s plenty of time to join up and try for one of the new badges that have been announced for this season!
