Super Smash Bros.:

64, Melee, Brawl (Brawl-Plus?)... take your pick.

You play these games -- but for what reason? There doesn’t need to be a more complicated answer beyond the simple response of, "They're fun, duh" but take a moment to consider all the reasons you continue to play this series. You could be using your time doing a hundred other things but instead you choose to spend some of it by either playing the game or being involved in the community. Enjoying the game itself should be a primary reason for playing it, of course, but there are many other underlying motivations that people have for both playing and being involved in the community. Such motivations may include:

1. The desire for recognition. Humans are seemingly hardwired to either strive to be the best, or to gravitate toward those who are perceived to be so. I suppose this could stem from the whole Natural Selection thing -- after all, whoever was the best was clearly going to survive (and get all the best mates at that!). Regardless of WHY exactly it seems to be an innate drive, the fact of the matter appears to be that we as humans crave recognition in one form or another. Think back to elementary school -- there were kids who were the best at math, the best at running, the best at spelling, the best at bullying, the best at tetherball... and they were recognized as such either through school awards or just word of mouth. From an early age we are brought up to recognize the achievements of others and to strive to create some of our own.

Neal, JV, Peachy and I want to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to apply to write for this site. There were many incredible applications, hence the long time it took us to come to a decision about who to select.

Well, we've come to a decision, and all of the members you see below are simply fantastic. We were highly impressed by what they sent in, and we're excited to see what they'll bring to the site. They've got lofty expectations to meet. Let's cheer them on.

We just wrapped up the Winter Ladder season yesterday which means today is the day we announce our Ladder Playoff Schedule! This seasons playoffs will be double elimination, which means you must lose two best-of-three sets before you are eliminated.

Here's how the playoffs work. Each week there will be meeting times for playing out the bracket. The tournament bracket contains the top 60 players from AiB's Fall Ladder Season with the top 4 players receiving byes in Winner's Bracket Round 1. Each player will be expected to meet in Tournament Chat Room 4 at 10:00PM ET on these scheduled days. If players know they cannot attend a selected time they should contact their opponent to schedule a new time before said selected time occurs. In addition to this, send AlphaZealot a PM to inform him of the situation. All rescheduled matches must occur before the next scheduled round (one to four day grace period, depending when the conflict occurs). Failing to be in Tournament Chat Room 4 at 10:00PM may result in a forfeit. *

*If one player fails to show up at the scheduled time (without having rescheduled) the player who did show up is advanced. If both players fail to show up at the scheduled time the higher seeded player will be advanced.

Winners Round 1 match ups will be announced on Monday afternoon (April 6, 2009). All players listed here except the top 4 are expected to show in Tournament Chat Room 4 at 10:00PM ET unless prior notice is given to AlphaZealot about a rescheduled match (matches do not need to be pre-approved before they are rescheduled, notice must simply be given so-as not to receive a forfeit, the result of a rescheduled match must be PM'd to AlphaZealot by both parties).

Winter Season Prize Information

The statistics, badges, and prizes will all be announced sometime next week. JV and I are heading to the Meadowlands with MLG this weekend and won't return until Monday. Once I step off the plan and open my laptop I'll get the playoff round 1 information and winter ladder recap posted (including who got badges!).

The competition is fierce and for that, congratulations to the top 32 for getting there. Good luck to you all.

A note to all Ladder Participants: it would really help those doing the updates if you had Main = ___ somewhere on your signature. Some of you have your main there but those doing the update wouldn't get your main wrong if that was clearly shown.  It would also cut down the time it takes to do an update dramatically and eliminate the comment searching. Thanks :)

The Fall Ladder has finally come to a close and what an exciting season it's been! Three months have passed since the start of the ladder and it's finally time to reward the top finishers for their hard work. This season's winner might come as a bit of a surprise, as Sean managed to rise over 15 positions from a week ago to take the top spot-making the leap to first in the final hours of the ladder last night. These are the badges that will be distributed this week to all of AiB's top players.

Overall 3,107 players signed up for the ladder and competed in 43,456 sets, that is approximately 7,250 hours of online Brawl or the equivalent of running sets back to back for over 300 straight days. There was an 18% increase in the number of participants and a 42% increase in number of matches played over the Fall Season.

Welcome to the fourth Weekly Ladder Update! This week there are two new names in the top 5 (Ally and HolyNightmare) but Clouderz is still holding on to the top spot for the 4th week in a row. Ally is fast on his heels though, could we see last seasons Ladder Champion take over the top spot now that he was switched from Falcon to Snake?
