Welcome to the first, and, hopefully, many of this series of articles. Almost all of these will take up some money and/or time. Today, I will be teaching you how to record matches to upload so you may put them on YouTube or in combo videos. Many of you probably either:

A) Use a camera/camcorder
B) Know what a capture card is, but have no idea how to set it up.
C) Use a DVR system.

Well, I’ll be here to teach you how to use a capture card. There are obviously many forms of capture card; for those who are good with computers and have a computer near a TV, (If you want to play and record at the same time) I would recommend getting an internal one. For those of you who aren’t good with computers or have laptops, I would recommend getting an external one that uses a USB port, such as:

But before you go out and buy a capture card, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does my computer/laptop have good speed?
  • Does it have good memory?
  • Does my computer/laptop have some hard drive space?
  • Is my computer/laptop near a TV or can it be near one?

What I mean by good speed is: does your computer lag all the time? If so, you’re going to have problems recording matches, so don’t get a capture card if your computer lags frequently. Memory is very important since it takes up a good bit amount of memory to record. As for hard drive space, you need a good amount, but not like 50 GB. You probably need about 2 GB open, since each recording is saved to about 100 to 500 megs (depending how long the matches are). As for your computer/laptop being near a TV: do you want to be able to record and play at the same time? If so, you need to do this. This is no problem though if you have a modded Wii and can record a whole match.

Now that that’s taken out of the way, let’s talk about hardware. You didn’t think it would be that easy, did you? Just buy a capture card and you’re good to go? Well if you’re just going to record, there is no problem doing in this or you could just play delay lag; though, if you want to play (without the lag) and record at the same time, you’re going to need more hardware.

Well, here is a check list of what you need and a few examples (going to the actual store you may be able to find a cheaper version of what I am posting up).

    -Capture Card

    -Y-Adapter (or Y-Splitter) 2 Female and 1 Male (3 of them) :

-Composite Cable (3 individual ones or one of them that has all 3, make sure they aren’t too short) :

Now, once that’s settled, install your capture card. I am not going to teach you how to do this. There’s an instruction manual with the product; use it. After you get the capture card installed, you then need your Wii composite cable (the thing you hook up to the TV to). Put the yellow plug into one of the Y-adapter, then one of the composite cables into the other side of the Y-adapter. After doing this, plug in the Y-adapter where the yellow cable to the TV should have gone, and the same cable to the yellow slot on the capture card. Repeat with all colors.

Now that it’s set up, open the program that came with the capture card. Before you begin recording, you should tell it where you want the file to be saved to. You should be able to record your matches from here on out.

I know that most of the videos I record are in .vob. I am not sure if YouTube now takes .vob, but, from what I’ve experienced, it does not. So, to get around this, just get a video converter. If you’re too lazy to look for one, I have one down below that I use.

ongratulations! Just by opening up this article you have become 25% more patriotic, and one step closer to helping make Brawl Hacks mainstream! You've also just made a huge decision that has the welcoming power, and the shocking sense of surprise, equal to that of walking in on Captain Falcon in the shower! What is that decision? You, as the reader, have now successfully agreed to consider expanding your horizons when it comes to making Brawl better for everyone, and you have also been hypnotized into giving me a dollar.

"But... who are you?" Indeed, a good question.

So there I was one night sitting all alone in my underwear, eating some "Spicy Sweet Chili" Doritos, sipping on a glass of sweet tea and scratching my itch for some company in AiB's social chat room (I wasn't going to say Krotch; get your mind out of the gutter) when all of a sudden Neal showed up and joined in on the conversation about my recent interest in hacked characters. After about 30 minutes, he told me that once I got my work finished, he would see about getting it posted on the front page of AiB.

Well, that didn't happen. Instead, I was talking about it a couple of days later when Staindgrey appeared and got in on the conversation. He took immediate interest in the situation, one thing led to another, and he told me to submit an application to the Content Team and his seeing about getting me on (then I asked him for Badge powers and he shot me down like a Pit main looking for arrow kills to put in their combo video)!

And here I am! TheEnigmaLiesBroken, at your service: Hax forum mod, regular visitor in Social Chat, Ex-Administrator of Wifistadium.com, Mewtwo, and apparently the deciding factor on whether or not the Brawl community of AiB gets the necessary information to possibly make hacks mainstream O_o (gulp).
