            The Smash scene has always been something of a mystery to those outside the community. It is often isolated from other gaming communities and as a result few realize the draw and staying power the games have had for over half a decade. One of the staples of the Smash community are the occasional community run, grassroots national tournaments. The roots of these tournaments go all the way back to 2003, when Matt Deezie ran the very first Smash national tournament, TG4. Since that time dozens more have occurred and a few tournaments have even risen to the international level in scope. 

            One of these tournaments is coming this weekend. As I mentioned a few weeks ago in “Super Smash Bros. Thriving Across the Country” over at majorleaguegaming.com, in just a few short days the Smash scene is looking forward to the international tournament Apex 2012. The last international tournament occurred in the summer of 2011 with over 400 people attending and over $22,000 in prize money. At that tournament, Genesis II, a Melee player from outside the United States won for the first time ever. The player Armada, hailing from Sweden, had traveled to the United States repeatedly over the years but until 2011 had not finished higher than second in singles at a major US tournament. Unlike many other competitive games, the US has typically dominated the international scene and is often considered the best at both Brawl and Melee. This history goes all the way back to former world champion Ken Hoang winning the Jack Garden tournament in Japan in 2005.

Many players outside the United States have proven they can achieve great heights, but until Armada’s victory six months ago none had proven they had what it took to be a champion. At Apex 2012 the saga will continue, with Armada once again coming to the United States –only this time he will not be the underdog, but the defending champion. Apex 2012 will have a plethora of high-level players attending for both games. Melee, having such a long history, offers an interesting diversity in talent. At the top of the list are all former and current national champions. Dr Peepee, the Falco main who won Pound 5 in early 2011, is by many considered the favorite to challenge Armada. To win though he will have to overcome other champions like Hungrybox and his Jigglypuff. Hungrybox’s time at the top has been steady for years; he won Apex 2010 and is typically in the top 3 at major national tournaments. Probably the most electrifying Melee player though will be Mango, considered at one point to be the most dominant player after Ken, he has won multiple national tournaments since 2009 and he is considered a threat with many characters.

Moving past these national champions though are former Melee players and legends in their own right. Isai, former Major League Gaming Doubles National Champion in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and widely considered the best Smash 64 player ever, will be attending. MLG 2006 National Champion PC Chris should also be showing off his, possibly rusty but certainly thrilling, skills. Other players from the days that MLG held Melee include Chillin, KoreanDJ, and Azen—two of which won MLG tournaments in 2005 and 2006. Captain Jack has reportedly booked his flight from Japan, he had placed top 3 at MLG’s 2004 National Championship.  Looking at these players, the talent at Apex 2012 is almost surpassed by the long and storied history and it is anyone’s guess who’ll come out on top. 

For Brawl the event looks to be just as exciting. Apex 2010 winner, DEHF, is set to defend his crown and shake off what was likely a bit disappointing 2010 MLG season. The player currently considered the best at Brawl will surely give DEHF one of his biggest obstacles in defending his crown. Since taking 4^th place at MLG’s 2010 National Championship, Ally has been on a rampage, winning over 20 tournaments in the last year alone, including the national Pound 5. He is the first player since Brawl’s release to overtake Mew2King in the SWF Rankings, a catalogue of over 4,500 unique players and 500 tournaments occurring in the last year alone. Other challenges to DEHF include Mr. R, considered one of the best Marth players and the best player from Europe.

  

While the competition will be fierce from all the aforementioned players, probably the most exciting matches will come from the Japanese. So far over ten Japanese players are slated to travel to Apex 2012. Among them was the Apex 2010 Runner-up, Brood, who showed the US players that Olimar can compete on an entirely different level. He stands as one of the only players to ever defeat both Ally and Mew2King in the same tournament. Another Japanese player, Kakera, is believed to have a Meta Knight that rivals Mew2King’s and many are looking forward to a potential showdown between the two. Finally, there is Nietono, who’s Olimar is held as the best in the world and who is frequently referred to as the best player in Japan.

All of these international players will be fighting a slew of American goliaths. The best of the US includes ADHD (Diddy Kong), Anti (Meta Knight), Atomsk (everything), NickRiddle (Zero Suit Samus), and ESAM (Pikachu). Many of these players are considered the best in the country with their character. 2010 MLG National Champion and winner of $12,500, Gnes, will grace the tournament and hopes are high for his and other Texas’ player’s attendance. Likely the odds-on favorite to win the tournament is Mew2King though, who despite a surge from Ally is still the most consistent Brawl player of the last four years. Mew2King has mentioned Apex 2012 may be his last tournament and a competitor at his level will always want to go out on top. He will be entering both Brawl and Melee and stands to win upwards of $10,000 if he performs well in both games.

Though the tournament is just three days away and already records have been set. With 410 Unique Brawl entrances it will be the largest Brawl tournament in history. The experience lasts three days from January 6^th-8^th, and aside from all three Smash games will also include competitions for Super Street Fighter IV AE, Ultimate Marvel v Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, and even Pokemon Black/White. If you live near the New Jersey area and don’t wish to enter a tournament but want to check it out, spectator passes are a mere $10. Registration will be taken at the door for Super Street Fighter IV AE, Ultimate Marvel v Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, and Pokemon. This is huge considering the recently EVO2k12 announced that Apex 2012 will be its kickoff event for their Road to EVO.

Hey AiB! How has everyone been doing? As most of have you probably gathered by now, Trish and I are collaborating on the AiB ladder updates for this season. This is my second article for you guys, and I hope it’s an improvement from my first. Thank you everyone for being patient and supportive as I get adjusted more to the Content Team. Singles:

• ADHD is still in the lead with a respectable 152 wins. He is also the only one consistently using Diddy who’s currently ranked.
• Raffi-X stays high in the rankings being the only R.O.B and Alphicans as Mr. Game and Watch.  Going further down the tier list
• Kimchi joins in with his Ike, and M to the Ekos continues displaying his Lucas. Good job guys!
• Mcpeepants and Kain keep stepping it up with Wolf.
• burntsocks (with an additional Yoshi and Snake), Aegis Angel Admiral Pit (all Pit), and Luckay4Lyphe (and Pikachu)  bring Pit into the light. Aegis Angel Admiral Pit has also taken an impressive leap half-way across the ladder rankings since the last ladder update. Nice work, Pits.
• Zebra and Waft continue with their Wario, while lordDtimeouT and SlayerZ keep representing their Peach.

Hey, everyone! How's it going? I hope everyone has been alright. Well anyway... you probably thought I was gone or something, but that is not the case. I was unable to work on the first ladder update due to my return from hiatus at the time, and I hope that is understandable. I thank Mocha for whipping up an update for me while I was gone! Also, if you probably didn't realize, she is currently co-working with me for this season's ladder updates. This is something I wanted to try out and to see how things go, so please bear with us as we switch off on each ladder update. Singles:

• ADHD is currently maintaining his position at the top of the ladder with a 92-point lead. How long will he be able to last?
• This time around, despite more top tier dominance, we're starting to see some Pits (from burntsocks, Luckay4Lyphe, and Aegis Angel Admiral Pit), Wolfs (from Mcpeepants and Kain), and a Mr. G&W (from Alphicans) added to the character variety from players un-ranked 2 weeks ago. Great job, you guys! And also, we have a Lucas added to the mix, as M to the Ekos is currently placing high with him. Very unique choice, I must say!
• The biggest drop in the ladder at this time is Stingers, dropping from 8th to 31st with his R.O.B. due to some inactivity. But not to worry though, Raffi-X is just getting started, making sure that at least one R.O.B. main can try to leave a mark on the ladder.
• Congrats to burntsocks for currently having an undefeated streak with his character variety of Pit, Snake, and Yoshi!

• With a few starting to decay, we have 4 other undefeated teams for this update. Besides 'We both lost to Wolf', 'we r gud', and 'Dat wiimote DI', we now have 'Sunshine Snuggle Brigade~'.
• Speaking of 'Dat wiimote DI', if you probably didn't catch this, they are currently the only pure mod team on these rankings, representing a double Kirby team! If you try to take 'em on, you have the opportunity to earn a Double Danger badge!

Not to worry, you guys have plenty of time to get the position you deserve before that happens. Try out the ladder if you haven't and have some fun! It's a great place to experiment with characters, practice, have fun and make new great friends. Remember that there is actually prize money to be won at the end of the ladder season if you make it very far! A lot of people have already started and gotten high up in the ranks with no problem at all. Perhaps one of you can do the same? -ADHD isn’t only using Diddy, but also Kirby, Marth, and King DeDeDe. It’s interesting to see our offline ranked players toy around with different characters. Nice work ADHD!
-MeroKnight is also showing a nice variety of character usage including Pokemon Trainer, Zero Suit Samus, and even Ganon!
- As far as high tiers go, the usage of Meta Knight and Snake isn’t all that surprising, however Waft-0LI and judge have been sneaking in Wario; ADHD, ANTi and BengalsRZ have been displaying their Marth; pkmonftw, dabuz, and Sinnyboo242 with their Olimars. Sinnyboo242 has also been placing well with his main, Ice Climber
- lloD and Illmatic. keeping their Peach in check. Good job you two!
- Congrats to So Fatal for being the only one currently on a win streak with no losses with his Snake (14-0)
- And ven displaying that Zelda representation – still need to learn his secrets. Good job ven!

Singles Notes

• Atomsk takes his 1st place spot back from dabuz, as he has not lost a match since the 6th of this month. In dabuz's position, it doesn't really help that he suffered 2 losses in a row! One to Ozz and another to YoshQ!

• HolyNightmare is known to usually be in the top placings in every AllisBrawl ladder season. He does it again and reaches the 2nd place spot, using his main, R.O.B.

• Now something we all haven't seen in a LONG time...a Donkey Kong player in the top 32 since ook last season! He goes by the name of Dr. Grandpa and is performing quite averagely as I can see, but just playing really good people.  

• These rankings were taken at 7:30 AM ET on Friday, February 19, 2010.

Doubles Notes

• What's this?! There is a new team that has taken the 1st place spot and that would be "Da Dragonz!" This team consists of Key and Inspectah, as mikeray4 and Bizkit have fallen to 4th place, being kicked off their throne for once!
  
  
• There are also a lot more activity and new teams on the rankings and they seem to not be playing around! I'm seeing a lot more good players from singles teaming and entering doubles, getting ahead very quickly! Tearbear and ChocoNaner, known as "flapjack and knuckles" used to team in the last season and did exceptionally well. Now they are teaming again and have made it to the top 16 already with 16 wins and 0 losses.

• Something fun that I can spot is another team called "Da Dragon Slayerz," which consists of Waft-OLi and Chad81 (formally known as Debom, who one of the last season's champs). I am unsure if their objective is to actually defeat the top team, or just surpass them. Maybe we will see soon!

Future Changes?

Now that the placings are shown and taken care of, I want to bring you guys back to the changes I was mentioning at the beginning of the update. As I said, these updates are going receive some major changes and you as a community will be a big part of it! I know I asked for suggestions last week, but still require a little bit of feedback from whoever is willing to help me out! Here are a few things I took into consideration and are thinking about:

-These “weekly” updates may become bi-weekly or even monthlies. This would make each update more to look forward to as the changes from the last update to the new would have much more changes. What do you guys think? Should the frequency of the updates change? Or should they remain weekly?

-Someone suggested I should maybe add in player interviews with the top 32/16 and have one each article. Only question I have for you guys on this is what questions would you guys expect to be asked? We have already provided player interviews in the past. I have heard some were boring and more interesting questions should be asked. I want to make these as entertaining to you all as possible. Help me out here.

-I was also interested in changing the notes section of the rankings. Reducing the amount of statistics, increasing more detail. Maybe going into more about certain players? What details would be nice to see?

-Adding in some more fun features to the articles. Maybe adding in featured replays from your ladder matches? Finding some funny feedback that some angry people leave on your profiles? Suggestions?

-Any other details I should be more into? Any suggestions help that would provide a better form of new entertainment for you all to read. Just be serious please.

So this is all I have on my mind right now. Your answers will influence my thoughts on the changes for the updates. I would be VERY appreciative if you all provide some feedback on here and maybe add in thoughts of your own. I just don’t want these articles to just be another boring thing to look at on the front page. I want this to be entertaining for you guys! The wi-fi scene of Brawl may not be as hyped as offline, but it is still something that can be very much fun! Thank you all for any help and feedback I receive.

There is a over a month left in this ladder season, and the competition is just as fierce as ever! Remember the AllisBrawl playoffs await the top 60 of singles and 30 of doubles, each event giving out over $350 in cash prizes to the top 4 placings! Everyday the rankings change and new names reach the top, as older ones drop. Who will still remain at the end of the season to participate in the playoffs? No one knows! • Dabuz finally takes 1st place away from Atomsk! He has been known to do very well in his ladder performance with Olimar. Although he's been seen occasionally using other characters such as Marth, Samus, and Sonic at random. Good job!

• Atomsk suffered 7 losses in a row last week, costing him a deduction of 112 points just because he was apparently using Falco in his ladder matches for once! He is currently using King Dedede again, which is his said main, and now winning more matches again.

• The following players have dropped out of last week's rankings: [17]CutestLilLucario, [19]YoshQ, [21]Pikabunz, [25]Cheese, [26]John123456, [28]MegaPlox, [30]Big_M, and [32]Baki Hanma.

• The amount of Diddy Kong players on the top 32 have increased! There are now 5 players what either main or 2nd him, with recent Pound 4 winner, ADHD, being the highest placed player of the bunch! They even outnumber the number of Meta Knights now! Of course, Snake still leads in character count though, with 7 players still using him.

• Top 5 players with the highest win % are NAKAT (.978), Zen (.963), Negga (.950), xxpatgxx (.946), and Halz E Fresh (.926). NAKAT seems to still have his win streak going which is currently at 26. Will anyone break it?

• Top 5 players with the most wins are: Raffi-X (150), Atomsk (149), Player-1 (102), addy (89), and Takeover1806 (76). Remember folks, the amount of wins on the ladder DO NOT mean you'll place high! It's all about who you play.

• There are now 2164 registered players on the ladder. That's about 130 more players since last week!

• "Orihime~Ichigo" make it into the top 16 with only 4 wins and 0 losses. The team consists of Orihime Inoue and Negga. Judging from the very minimal feedback, they may be a Diddy Kong + Olimar team, but many people change characters just for doubles specifically so you can't judge anything that easily until you play them.

• Up to now, there are 395 registered teams on the ladder. Doesn't anyone else want to play in some doubles matches?

Something you don't see often eh? Well to explain it all in depth, I was thinking of changing these updates a bit to keep you all interested in reading instead of just seeing these as "another update" to just look at. Welcome to the seventh Fall Ladder Update! Last week, I decided to remove the Doubles Ladder rankings from the last update. After thinking about it for a bit, I have came to the conclusion of re-adding it back to the updates, as it may attract more members to participate in the ladder. As we look into both of the ladders, there has been quite a stir of rank placements! In singles, we have many players very close to each other, where if one game versus the right player is won, they will pass quite a few members! The same thing goes for doubles as well! Welcome to the sixth Fall Single Ladder Update! October is now over, leaving us all with 1 more month left before the season is over.
