The New Ladder Has Arrived

Hey ladder participants and enthusiasts! Linkz here bringing you the news I’m sure you’ve all been anticipating: ladder playoffs and prizing! Back in December, around the end of the Fall ’12 Ladder season, we announced that playoffs would be canceled in order for us to restructure the ladder system. We wanted to explore ways to bring increased hype and activity and come up with a new plan moving forward. It’s taken a bit longer than we originally anticipated, but we’re finally ready to announce the new system.

Playoffs will now be running on a tier based system. Each tier has prizes associated with it, so the higher up the tiers you progress, the more prizes you win. Now, while we’re sure that this new system is bound to bring players back to the ladder, we decided to add another twist to how playoffs are going to run. Because more prizes will be available to more people, we’re reducing the number of people that can participate in playoffs.  The top 32 singles participants, and the top 16 doubles teams will be playoffs eligible. Since we’re reducing the number of participants, match requirements have been dropped.

At this point, I’m sure you’re interested in seeing what this tier system looks like, as well as learning about the prizes that are going to be available. So, without further ado, I present the tier system:

Singles
Tier I-Top 32
Prize: Special "Playoffs Badge" Stating Qualified for Ladder Playoffs (no name color)

Tier II- Top 16
Prize: Blue Name Badge

Tier III -Top 8

Misc Tier - Trophies Awarded

*Full list to be released at a later date*-Description of system below

If you notice in the upper tiers there’s a trophy listed as a prize. Well aside from just going to the corresponding ladder playoff finisher. We are going to hand out trophies at the end of each season. These categories could include things such as “sickest combo, best spike, highest low tier finisher, etc.”. If a video is required the way it will work is that eligible participants will be able to send in replays of themselves or their team in order to receive consideration to earn a trophy for a certain category. Some categories will then be put up to a community vote, while others selected among staff or past ladder winners. You can expect full details and categories in the coming weeks.

That about covers the ladder tiered prizing. Just one last thing to mention, as far as prizes go, is JV and the AiB leadership plan to spend the next few months making a strong push for sponsors for our ladders. Anything we are able to do with sponsors will lead to increased prizing for ladder seasons. We hope to have more exciting news on this front in the coming months.

Hopefully you’re all as pumped as I am about getting the ball rolling with this new system. The system will go into effect immediately, so yes, this season’s playoffs will be the first to operate with the tier system. There’s still a little over a month left in this season, so that should be plenty of time for people to step up their game and make it into the playoffs and nab some prizes.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the ladders and ready for our brand new playoffs! And by all means let us know what you think of the new structure in the comment section. We think we have a really strong and exciting base going forward. But community input is going to be invaluable as we look to tweak the system to get as much activity and hype as possible for each and every ladder season we do.

Another playoffs has come and gone, and I have all the results for your viewing pleasure. Let's give a round of applause to the following users!

Singles:

1st place: SlayerZ ($200)
2nd place: Ally ($100)
3rd place: Nairo ($50)
4th place: PentaSalia ($20-25)

Doubles:

1st place: Nairo and HiiiPoWeR Kyleisreal ($50 each)
2nd place: Rayquaza07 and Uno. ($25 each)

Congratulations to you all, and I'll make sure to send the results to JV so he can distribute the prizes as soon as he returns from Japan. (He can do it either via Paypal or mail, so when he sends you a notice, be sure to tell him your preference.)

On a personal note, I wanted to give a few shoutouts for the people that helped make this a good event. Keep those hands clapping!

1. Enrish and The740 (I don't care if he doesn't actually see this.)
Contrary to your words and despite this being my first time running playoffs (or any tournament for that matter,) this wasn't a living hell at all. Of course, that's probably because I followed your advice with respect to how things should be done, so thanks a lot for the pointers. Where would I be without your guidance, O Mighty Senseis?

2. Meek.
That stream of yours was a very nice touch, and brought quite a bit of hype for singles. It was a shame to see it die down as the matches became less and less, but I guess it's to be expected when a majority play ahead and leave the rest to play whenever. Regardless, I'm glad you suggested it, and I hope you'll consider doing it again in the future.

3. All of the participants.
As Enrish said time and time again, you guys are what make or break playoffs. In my opinion, things went pretty well without too many hiccups. Sure there were some disqualifications, but I'm not too concerned about that. This isn't a perfect world, so it's to be expected that the brackets may have stragglers. Anyway, thank you all for your awesome cooperation.

Now, let's talk about the next ladder season. Come August 31st, there will be two big changes  for the ladder system.

1. Double Meta Knight is banned from doubles ladder. The public has spoken, and we've decided to give it a try. So, from here on out, only one Meta Knight will be allowed per team.

2. Badges will be tied into the match requirements. Out of the three proposals previously made public, Enrish and I decided to go with only one: match requirements for badges. This is to prevent users from playing one or two matches and making it into the top 64 or 32 for a badge. That being said, we realize activity has declined over the seasons, so we won't make the limits too crazy. They are as follows: 25 matches for singles, and 10 for doubles. If users can meet those requirements, there's no reason they can't play a few extra matches to make the playoffs requirements, especially if everyone else will be fighting to meet them as well.

Another thing to note is that this season may very well be an Apex qualifier, just like last year. This requires neal, though, but since he's the only one who can change seasons, I don't see how he wouldn't be able to make it happen. Stay tuned for an official update when the fall ladder starts.

That's about all I have to say. Congratulations again to the victors, and to those who wish to compete this season, I wish you the best of luck!

P.S. To those players who still never received their prizes, JV still hasn't returned from vacation. However, he told me before he left that he sent messages about adresses or accounts to send the payments to, and never got replies. Please send him the necessary information again via AiB PM or email so that he can tend to it upon returning.

P.P.S. Here are the links to the brackets: http://oi45.tinypic.com/6pswes.jpg (singles) and http://oi45.tinypic.com/2pyqlh4.jpg (doubles)

Well folks, the moment you've all been waiting for is here: playoffs! That's right, it's that time of the season where wifi warriors to go head to head for prizes totaling $520! But this time, there are some notable changes in how things are going down, and this article will give you all the details. Let's get started.

---

1. Playoffs will last for exactly twelve days. (The twelve represents the ten rounds for doubles, and two extra for singles.) What does this mean for you? Well, from here on out, provided there are no interruptions, you will have ONE DAY to play your round. The reason for this is simple: in the past, when Enrish of the Hidden ZipFizz ran playoffs, he allowed you all to make up your own schedules and play your matches whenever. However, that caused quite a few issues with respect to organization, which in turn resulted in numerous disqualifications. Does this intend to eradicate disqualifications completely? No, because you will get disqualified if you don't play your matches on time. Should this make things more organized, however? Yes. That being said, it's important you all have easy access to the bracket so you know who you're supposed to play, which brings me to my next change.

2. The bracket will be streamed on the front page. Keitaro's blog raised an excellent suggestion about live brackets. When I sent a message to him asking for what exactly he wanted, he said that something similar to Challonge would do just fine. Sounds good...except that requires programming, which neal's too busy (and in some cases, lazy) to do. But then it hit me: we already have a live stream panel, and theoretically, anything can be put there so long as it's in a neat little hyperlink form. Therefore, during the weeks playoffs occur, the bracket will be up on the front page for all to see. I will also save all the links for the aftermath article at the end of the season, in case you all are interested to see how things have progressed over time.

3. Subbing, disputing, or any other kind of misconduct/cheating WILL NOT be tolerated. To those who don't know, playoffs were quite chaotic last time. Among site and wifi issues, there was a dispute and claims of subbing. This fiasco was the first time anything like it has happened (to Enrish's and my knowledge, at least,) and we certainly don't want it to happen again. If you get in a dispute with a user, you both will be disqualified and possibly never play in playoffs again (if you have a habit of disputing people on ladder.) If you have someone sub for you, and we find out, the following will happen:
  • Permanent disqualification from ladder.
  • Cheater badge.
  • Ladder cheating infraction.
  • Three permanent infraction points.

This isn't some match on the regular ladder. This is playoffs. Money's involved here, and I don't think JV appreciates people trying to steal some of it. I know it's wifi and a majority of you think it's terrible, but don't let your hatred for online play cause you to get greedy and disruptive.

---

Those are pretty much all of the changes in a nutshell. Now it's time to tell you the generic playoffs stuff:

Due to WHOBO 4 taking place this weekend, I have pushed the first round back a day to give attendees an opportunity to return home. The schedule is as follows:

August 8th: Round 1
August 9th: Round 2
August 13th: Round 3
August 14th: Round 4
August 15th: Round 5
August 16th: Round 6
August 20th: Round 7
August 21st: Round 8
August 22nd: Round 9
August 23rd: Round 10
August 27th: Losers and Grand Finals

For all of these dates, singles matches will occur from 8-9 PM EST in Tournament Chat 1. Doubles matches will occur from 9-10 PM EST in Tournament Chat 2. If you cannot play your matches during these times, you are allowed to play earlier if your partner is online. Other than that, remember that these are strict deadlines, so be sure to play on time.  Whenever a match is played, or if your opponent(s) is/are MIA, report to me so that I can make a note of it.

Here are the payouts for the event:

Singles:
1st - $200
2nd - $100
3rd - $50
4th - $20-25

Doubles:

1st - $100 ($50/player)
2nd - $50 ($25/player)

I thought I had included something about this in the first writeup, but I didn't. Also, shoutout to Enrish to ninja-ing me to the edit. You're so cool!

Back to the article. I plan to make the brackets this weekend (Sunday or Monday perhaps,) so if you do not wish to participate, please let me know. I don't want to make a thousand edits when I can easily make one or two by getting your input on the matter. Also note that if you do choose to withdraw, this decision is final. Think long and hard before you say anything to me.

---

That's about all you need to know if you're in it to win it. Good luck to everyone competing in WHOBO 4, and I will see all of you wifi warriors Tuesday night!

P.S. Badges will be made soon, so please don't flood my shoutouts or inbox with those inquiries.
Playoffs ended about two weeks ago after the most chaotic season it has seen in at least three years, if not ever. There was multiple suspicions of people subbing for others, two very large disputes, site problems at least twice on scheduled nights, and issues with Nintendo's server. Nonetheless, even with all that chaos, we managed to finish only a week behind schedule thanks to the dedicated participants. Here are the winners!

Singles:
1st - SlayerZ
2nd - Gonzalo ZeRo
3rd - M to the Ekos
4th - Zorai.

Doubles:
1st - -Randum- + A-Oh
2nd - Killuminati Patg + Mysterion

Congratulations to you all!

With a new season upon us, we're looking to the future. This last two or three months, I've noticed all the comments the members of this site had to say about ladder. There's been statements about how we need more events, that there needs to be more hype, and that playoffs need to be run better. And so today, as with the other recent "times of change" movements, I present to you some of the major changes that you'll see from now on:

1. This season, we're looking to upgrade all of the rules in ladder. We want everything to be as updated and specific as possible so as not to cause confusion, and everyone will know without a doubt when something is okay or not okay to do. Invinciboy and I have already spent multiple hours towards updating the rules, and will continue doing so. That being said this season we will be enforcing the Apex stage list once again this season, and continue to do so for future ladders. The rules have been updated to show which stages the Apex stage list supports, so please make sure you're frequently checking the rules for updates.

2. We are considering the ban of double Meta Knight in Doubles ladder, but first we would like the members' opinion on it. Very soon, we will be posting a poll where you can voice your opinion on the matter.

3. Ladder and playoffs will be hyped once again! Bi-weekly ladder updates will occur on a consistent, rotating schedule, and we're going to have special events for ladder every weekend in order to give players more of a chance to meet the requirements. Meanwhile, Invinciboy and myself will be putting countless hours into hyping the playoffs and seeing what we can do to make things a little easier for everyone.

4. Though all these changes are of significant importance, the most important change will be who's now in charge of ladder. About three months ago, when first working towards the site's revolution, I came to the realization that I can no longer offer the site what it needs by myself. Because of that, I decided I was going to distribute five of my positions to what Neal, JV_, and I felt were the most qualified staff. Though we haven't made a final decision on the other positions, picking the new Head of Ladder was pretty easy. So without further ado, let me introduce the new Head of Ladder: Invinciboy! From now on, he will be in charge of everything that has to do with ladder, including hosting playoffs. For this first season (at least), I will be helping him out. You requested that another person help the host out so things can run smoothly, and so it has been done.

There are more changes we have in mind, but those will be announced later.

---

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger." This famous phrase by Friedrich Nietzche has never meant so much to ladder and playoffs. We survived one hell of a season, and now that we know what needs to be focused on, we're going back to the drawing board and making sure this next season paves a path of improvement. Of course, we're always looking for suggestions. If you have an idea that you feel could improve the ladder system, let us know! There are no right or wrong answers, but please be clear with what you mean. (In other words, don't just say, "The playoffs schedule sucks! Enrish was an *** for using it!")

We hope you all enjoy the changes and proposals we've presented so far, and stay tuned for future updates!
Playoffs are just three days away, and with participants having a chance to win an extra $50 to $300 this season will truly be exciting. Since this season is different from the others I wanted to talk about some things and give everyone an idea on what's going on before the playoffs actually begin.

First, the ladder will be closing on November 20, 2011 at 11:59pm PST. Playoffs will not have it's first schedule match until December 5th! This gives everyone a chance to enjoy their Thanksgiving break.  I will try to have the brackets up by some time on the 22nd to give everyone about two weeks to get matches done early. I understand December is a very busy month for everyone. Between finals in the beginning of the month and holidays at the end of the month people won't have much free time. Unfortunately, we are under a very strict schedule, so we have to get all matches done on time. If you make it into the playoffs but don't think you'll be able to participate please let me know. It's one less person I have to worry about during the playoffs, and this way I don't have to burden you with the all the PMs I send to the playoff participants. Anyways, lets get to the playoffs schedule!

A friendly reminder that there is a match requirement for both singles and doubles to get into the appropriate playoffs. You must play 30 matches in singles ladder and get top 60 in order to get into the singles playoffs. You must play 20 matches (with your current team) in doubles ladder and get top 30 in order to get into doubles playoffs. Yes, that means the doubles requirement will not be lowered from 20.

You'll have one last good chance to get doubles matches in with Doubles Weekend happening this weekend. Reminder that Doubles Weekend is generally three Doubles Night back-to-back-to-back. There will be a set time for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and if you play three matches during the set time of any of the three days you will be awarded the double dater badge! This means you must play three matches during the set time in one day. You can't play one match each day and get the badge. Along with the double dater badge you will given the chance to get the new weekend warrior badge. In order to get this badge you must play two matches during the set time of all three days. Yes, that means two matches Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. Please message me with a link of your team's ladder profile to get the badges.

Doubles Weekend will be happening this weekend, Nov. 18 to Nov. 20. The set times are:
Friday 4pm EST to 1am EST
Saturday 1pm EST to 2am EST
Sunday 1pm EST to 11pm EST

*Remember that while Doubles Weekend set time is in Eastern Standard Time, the ladder closing is based on Pacific Standard Time. For those who don't know EST is three hours ahead of PST, meaning ladder will close at 2:59am EST on November 21st.

Good luck to everyone and I look forward to seeing you in the playoffs!
It's been a long and arduous experience, but as of yesterday, the Spring '11 Singles and Doubles Playoffs have finally come to an end! Here are the rankings:

Singles:

1st ($200): Ally
2nd ($100): dabunsaur
3rd ($50): Salem
4th ($25): HolyNightmare

I'd say I was surprised to see Ally come up from behind and claim first prize, but that'd be a lie because I saw it from a mile away. lol. Congratulations to all that earned some free cash, as well as everyone else that qualified for playoffs! And for those interested in seeing the singles bracket in its entirety, here it is!

Doubles:

1st ($100): Aliados Impuros (HolyNightmare and Ally)
2nd ($50): Midwest dabesssss (Sinnyboo242 and Childish Gambino)

This could've went in several directions, considering how Sinny and Childish retained the first place spot for a majority of the season. Regardless, congrats to both teams and everyone that got through to compete! And here is the complete doubles bracket.

---

This season certainly had its ups and downs, and will forever be recorded as the most stressful season in history. (My opinion, at least.) However, that's all in the past. With a new ladder around the corner and much bigger stakes, I encourage everyone to keep a stiff upper lip and prepare to go far! (Yes, we realize neal's slacking with the ladder update, but stay tuned as he should be on and fix it soon.) Until then, train hard, stay in school, and practice good hygiene. Peace out, All is Brawl!
Playoffs have come once again and will be as exciting as ever. After many months of epic battles and stunning upsets, 60 of our finest singles ladder participants and 30 of our best doubles teams are ready and eager to duke it out vs each other to show us all who's really the best.

So without further ado, here are the cold hard facts about how this will get done.

Important pre-words:

It is every players/teams own responsibility to schedule their own matches before the deadline of every round. If you are not able to schedule your match before the set time for chat, then you MUST be in chat to play your match(es). Failure to do so will put you in risk of being disqualified and thus given a loss for the round in question.
In addition to this, it is also the responsibility of ALL ladder players/teams to send the host of his/her playoffs event(Enrish) a PM about the outcome of the match right after it gets done. Even if the host is in the chat with you, you must PM him the results (not chat PM). We need to be certain that nothing is overlooked or forgotten. Failure in sending this PM can result in reprimands as stated above.
Also, please make sure your inbox/outbox always has room. I will be updating everyone after every round (except days where there are two rounds) telling you who you play, when I expect the matches to be done, and more. If you are only in the Doubles playoffs, then the captains will be receiving the PMs.
I, and nobody else is your babysitter. Because of this I, Enrish, will most likely NOT be in the chat rooms most nights. I will try to have at least two staff members in the room at all times, but there shouldn't be a need for it. All you have to do is contact your opponent(s), schedule a time that works for both/all of you, play the set and PM me the results before the deadline. That's four easy steps. You don't only have a good 23 to 95 hours to get the match done, we scheduled a special hour just for you to get it done. If no referees are in the room when the scheduled time is up, your opponent isn't there and he/she didn't PM beforehand, please take a screenshot of the chat so we have proof they weren't there. Be warned though, if we find out you lied about their presence you will be disqualified.

Bracket Images
The bracket images for each playoffs event will be updated daily. In order to see the latest update, you will have to press ctrl+F5 while looking at the brackets. Don't forget this.

Europeans, we know this set schedule doesn't really work for you. Because of this, it is your job to get your matches in as early as possible so you can advance as far as possible.

Recent Season Changes
Every season, we look for ways on how to make the playoffs better for all and I think this time around we found some good ideas.
  1. Volunteered staff members will be monitoring the chats to prevent confusions. As stated about, they should not be needed, but in case of emergency there will, or should be 2-5 people in the chat rooms during the playoffs. They will, or should be the only people in their with bold referee name colors, so memorize the referee badge color so you know who to contact. Please keep in mind though that they are volunteers, and that there is no need to harass them if they weren't there to help you at the time.
  2. To prevent some chaos and confusion, I have decided to divide up the two events into two different chat rooms. From now on, or at least for this playoffs season, singles playoffs will take place in Tournament Chat 3 from 8pm to 9pm EST and doubles playoffs will take place in Tournament Chat 4 from 9pm to 10pm EST.
  3. On days there are two rounds that need to be played, there are two deadlines. The first match is expected to be done within thirty minutes of starting time, and the second round should be done within the hour. That would be 8:30pm EST and 9pm EST for singles, and 9:30pm EST and 10pm EST for doubles. If you have not appeared in the chat twenty minutes after the round was scheduled to start, you will be disqualified from that round. People who have opponents who are MIA(Missing In Action) at such time must screenshot it, send it to me through a PM, and inform the chat watcher. For days where there is only one round, if you have not appeared after 30 minutes of the scheduled time, you will be disqualified. Please follow the same procedure. If you are unable to make it, please PM me and your opponent(s) of that day. Falling three rounds behind could still get you disqualified.
  4. This was always suggested behind the scenes, but now it's time to leave it out in the open. If you are a participant in either playoffs please do not change your name until the playoffs are over. It makes it far more difficult to contact you.

Last Season's Changes
As stated above we are always looking for means of improvement. I honestly think last season was our best. We finally got a good schedule and I'm looking forward to a similar one this season. In the end though there were still some problems. Hopefully these new updates will fix that!
  1. You'll notice in the schedule below that we have the first scheduled match set for tomorrow. This will give people some time to get ahead of the game. To ensure that people take advantage of the extra time we offer rewards!
  2. Card Rewards!
    1. If you finish Round 1 by Monday, August 15th 11:59PM EST you will receive a pack of cards or a rare of my choice.
    2. If you finish Round 6 by Sunday, August 21st 11:59PM EST you will receive a pack of cards or a rare of my choice.
  3. You have the option to obtain either one reward or both. This means that even if you don't complete the first round in time you can still complete the sixth round to claim one reward.

This about wraps up the Playoffs article! I would like to apologize for posting this so late. The original plan was to get it posted by the second but problems arose that prevented us from doing so. We got this to you as soon as we could. And with that, let's wish all of the competitors good luck!

Europeans, we know this set schedule doesn't really work for you. Because of this, it is your job to get your matches in as early as possible so you can advance as far as possible.

Last Season Changes
  3. People have volunteered to record playoff matches. We will aim to have the finals recorded, but if you, whether you're a viewer or participant, have a match you would like to have recorded, please PM [We are currently looking for volunteers. This will be editted when they are found.] beforehand. Please give them as much time as possible to know about your request. Just like the staff members, they are voluntarily doing this, so please don't get mad if they're not there to record your matches. Also, besides the fact that they'll most likely have multiple requests, if participants in the match don't approve of their recording, then they obviously can't get into the room to record it.
  5. This was always suggested behind the scenes, but now it's time to leave it out in the open. If you are a participant in either playoffs please do not change your name until the playoffs are over. It makes it far more difficult to contact you.

This Season's Changes
As stated above we are always looking for means of improvement. I honestly think last season was our best, even with the time constraint. In the end though there were still some problems. Hopefully these new updates will fix that!
  1. You'll notice in the schedule below that we have the first scheduled match eight days after today. This will give people time to get ahead of the game. To ensure that people take advantage of the extra time we offer rewards!
  2. Card Rewards!
    1. If you finish Round 2 by Friday, April 8th 11:59PM EST you will receive 100 coins.
    2. If you finish Round 4 by Sunday, April 10th 11:59PM EST you will receive a little pack of cards.
    3. If you finish Round 6 by Sunday, April 17th 11:59PM EST you will receive a rare of my choice.

Great job to you guys for making it to the top! As always, determined by rank, badges will be given out momentarily to these champions as well as to those who made it to the top 64 in singles and top 32 in doubles, but I would like to re-cap on those badges that are distributed (and yes, these come with the blue color for your usernames; though the top 8 are likely getting a different name color).

We had 2,313 players on the singles ladder; and 394 teams (788 players) on the doubles ladder! There's no surprise we've got a veteran champion on here we all know, and it's none other than Ally! He has been crowed the singles ladder champ for the fifth time as of now. Closure / Playoffs Info

These players and teams listed above (who are in the top 60 in singles and top 30 in doubles) have made it to the playoffs, and will be competing for over a total of $525 in prize money. The playoffs definitely begin tonight! While you're reading this, you shall refer to Enrish's article for the complete details and brackets right here. And for a few similar reminders, it is mandatory for all participants to be on time for their matches and to send PMs of their results to their respective hosts (which is Enrish for both singles and doubles)! If for some reason some of you cannot make it to the scheduled times, then you should send a PM to your host and your opponent about your situation. Of course, you'll be allowed to try to get matches in as early as possible (this especially goes for you Europeans out there!), so there are no worries. To conclude this, we congratulate every participant once more for making it this far! We wish you all the best of luck! Have fun~! :3

Even if the host is in the singles chat with you, you must PM him the results (not chat PM).

Whoa... hey there! How's it going, everyone? The 2010 Spring Ladders have finally come to an end not too long ago, and now, the playoffs have arrived! Yes, we sincerely apologize for closing the ladders about 2 days late due to Neal having some real-life matters. Anyway, we would like to congratulate our champion of the singles ladder, Anti; and the champions of the doubles ladder, Raffi-X and judge of team "Victorious"! Great job to you guys for making it to the top! Of course, determined by rank, badges will be given out momentarily to these champions as well as to those who made it to the top 64 in singles and top 32 in doubles, but I would like to re-cap on those badges that are distributed.

To conclude this, we congratulate every participant once more for making it this far! We wish you all the best of luck! Have fun~! :3
