That is unfortunately one of Homestuck's main problems. There's a large barrier to entry consisting of free time you have to devote. We're looking at almost 5000 pages (which, in fairness vary wildly in how much content they equate to), and since it's ongoing...

I'd recommend you give it a shot should free time become something you have. Otherwise, you should at least be sure you're caught up on Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff.
